Excerpt from Popular Map Reading The following chapters represent an elaboration of the writer's notes compiled for use with his divisions at Harrow and treat the subject in a simple manner. The aim has been to produce a popular work, a text-book which the non-specialist can appreciate, and above all one that is not too unpleasant to read. The map is introduced from the very beginning and is kept in the forefront through out. There is a minimum of mathematics, and What there is has been put Simply and in a way likely to appeal to those Whose forte is not mathematics. Topographical features are described and illustrated, and their representations on the map are given as standards of reference. A map area is discussed at length and the method of combining separate features to form a whole landscape is fully treated. Last and perhaps most important of all, the human interest is kept in view throughout, and the uses of Map Reading to the geographer, the rambler, the mountaineer, the motorist, the soldier or the historian are urged in the hope of bringing the subject into touch with the living world. Whether these aims and methods have been successful or not the reader will judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Map Reading For Aviators written by C. B. Benson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-06 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Map Reading for Aviators: With a Chapter on Aerial Navigation A Map is a graphical representation of a portion of the earth's surface. Information of the natural and artificial features is conveyed to the reader by means of lines, symbols, words, and abbreviations. It is drawn to scale - that is, there is a definite relation between the space on the map and the ground distance represented. The amount and character of the information given on a map depend upon the use to which the map is to be put and the size - or the scale - of the map. It is obvious that more detail can be shown on a large than on a small map of the same area. The features to be left off the map are determined by the use which is to be made of it. For instance, the ordinary County Map shows only property lines, streams and dwellings. Its purpose is to enable the County Clerk to keep track of the taxes, etc., and it is immaterial to him whether there is a hedge or barbed wire fence between John Brown's property and William Smith's. The map found in a railroad time-table does not show types of bridges along the line, or whether the highways are metaled or not, but it does show the sequence of the towns and villages passed thru, the large streams crossed, and connections which can be made with other railroads. Maps of these two types rarely show differences in elevation. That information is not essential to their purpose. The topographic map, on the other hand, goes into detail as to the exact form of the ground, the location of buildings, fences, highways, railroads, and other natural and artificial features. A military map is an elaborate topographic map. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
