Beneath the surface of public-policy concerns that seem temporary are powerful evolutionary forces with long-term effects. One of the most important of these is the profound demographic change taking place in America-change which has extraordinary social and economic consequences, and far-reaching public-policy implications for the future of the nation. James W. Hughes and Joseph J. Seneca have assembled experts on demography, immigration, policy, and family life to explain and document both changes and prospects for changes. Contributors profile the contours of demographic change in America and identify select public-policy challenges arising from this change. They cover a wide range of demographic shifts-"baby booms" and "baby busts," rising immigration, increasing ethnic and racial diversity, the proliferation of different household configurations, economic upward mobility that stems from the information-age rather than the industrial economy, and suburban and sunbelt gains.

The essays in this volume consider the state of China's economic reforms, the institutional changes necessary for China to become a global economic power, and the interplay between market reforms and social development in China.

National Policy on Older Persons formulated by the Government of India aims at their wellbeing by strengthening legitimate place for them in the society so that during the last phase of their life they could live with purpose, dignity, and peace. The old in India face deprivations on many counts - economic, emotional, and of course health. With the breakdown of the joint family system and disintegrating traditional care systems the old have become even more vulnerable. A low birth rate, with a corresponding rise in life expectancy, has lead to a situation where the numbers of care seekers outnumber the caregivers. This places an immense stress on social relationships. Unless the old are given meaningful roles in society, they will experience a vacuum. The responsibility for caring of the aged in the new millennium will have to be borne jointly by the young wage earners and the government. Unless measures are taken quickly very few of the old will be proud of living longer. The elderly crave for respect, love, affection and attention. A positive way to look at the elderly is to consider them as a human resource full of experience and skills and not as a liability. These should be meaningfully utilised by offering them second career options.

What will California look like by the middle of the twenty-first century? Change is occurring in the state at a breathtaking pace. The state will face many extraordinary challenges. Yet today most Californians believe that their elected officials are unable to develop effective public policies. Mark Baldassare examines the powerful undercurrents--economic, demographic, and political--shaping California at this critical juncture in its history. He focuses on three trends that are profoundly affecting the social and political landscape of the state: political distrust, racial and ethnic change, and regional diversity. Baldassare discusses the complexities of this situation and offers a series of substantive recommendations for how California can come to terms with the unprecedented challenges it faces.

Globalization written by Marcelo Suarez-Orozco and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-01 with Education categories.

Globalization defines our era. While it has created a great deal of debate in economic, policy, and grassroots circles, many aspects of the phenomenon remain virtual terra incognita. Education is at the heart of this continent of the unknown. This pathbreaking book examines how globalization and large-scale immigration are affecting children and youth, both in and out of schools. Taking into consideration broad historical, cultural, technological, and demographic changes, the contributors—all leading social scientists in their fields—suggest that these global transformations will require youth to develop new skills, sensibilities, and habits of mind that are far ahead of what most educational systems can now deliver. Drawing from comparative and interdisciplinary materials, the authors examine the complex psychological, sociocultural, and historical implications of globalization for children and youth growing up today. The book explores why new and broader global visions are needed to educate children and youth to be informed, engaged, and critical citizens in the new millennium. Published in association with the Ross Institute
