El libro aborda, ya desde los primeros capítulos, la cuestión del sexo y del género, tan de actualidad. Pero no termina ahí sino que, a partir de la pregunta formulada ya desde el título (¿Por qué las mujeres se casan con hombres mayores que se mueren antes?) intenta contextualizar el sexo y el género como resultado de la interacción entre la filogenia (biología) y la cultura. La especie humana es el resultado final de un continuo evolutivo que le une con el resto de los seres vivos. Sin embargo, hay importantes diferencias biológicas y culturales que identifican lo que se suele llamar “la naturaleza humana”. Este libro reflexiona sobre algunas de estas diferencias a las que no siempre les han sido prestadas la debida atención: ¿Realmente hay una brecha de edad (diferencia de edad) entre hombres y mujeres en la selección de pareja y en la esperanza de vida? Estas brechas, ¿son el resultado de la evolución o tienen unos condicionamientos culturales? ¿Por qué la de los humanos es la especie más longeva entre los primates? ¿Qué tienen que ver la selección de pareja con el envejecimiento y la diferente esperanza de vida entre hombres y mujeres? ¿Por qué los humanos son el único primate con una vida pos-reproductiva tan larga? ¿Por qué aparece en la especie humana la menopausia? ¿Qué papel juega la menopausia y las abuelas en el éxito de la especie y en la longevidad? ¿Por qué somos un “animal” tan hipersexualizado? ¿Existe realmente el sexo o es toda una cuestión de género? Para responder a estas y otras cuestiones, hemos utilizado las series históricas de las grandes bases de datos del INE, tanto de los matrimonios como de la esperanza de vida en España, lo que ha permitido realizar análisis originales que, de manera tabular, son presentados a lo largo de los capítulos. Se han utilizado también bases de datos e información internacional, así como abundante bibliografía, proporcionándole al lector una actualización estructurada de los asuntos tratados, escasamente sistematizados en la literatura. El libro aporta un análisis fundamentado en la experiencia personal y en la bibliográfica mundial, que puede contribuir a un mejor conocimiento de estas singularidades humanas, y, de paso, aportar razones al debate actual sobre qué cosa es el sexo y qué el género.

Zarathustra was Nietzsche's masterpiece, the first comprehensive statement of his mature philosophy, and the introduction of his influential and well-known (and misunderstood) ideas including the "overman" or "superman" and the "will to power." It is also the source of Nietzsche's famous (and much misconstrued) statement that "God is dead." Though this is essentially a work of philosophy, it is also a masterpiece of literature, a cross between prose and poetry. A considerable part and parcel of Nietzsche's genius is his ability to make his language dance, and this is what becomes extraordinarily difficult to translate. It has been almost 40 years since Hollingdale's version for Penguin and almost 50 since Kaufmann's. However, anyone who appreciates the German original knows that these translations are merely adequate. While earlier translators have smoothed out the rough edges, cut corners and sometimes omitted troublesome passages outright, this one honors and respects the original as no other. Kaufmann and others are guilty of the deplorable tendency to "improve" on the original. Much is lost by this means, to say nothing of the interior rhythms, the grace notes, the not always graceful but omnipresent and striking puns and wordplays. And in not a few instances the current translation improves on Kaufmann's use of English or otherwise clarifies what Nietzsche is really saying
