Most soft clays in their natural state exhibit a small degree of overconsolidation resulting from changes in ground water level, delayed consolidation, or other causes. The overconsolidation ratio is commonly in the range of 1.0 to 2.5. Under surface loading, pore pressures in such a deposit will develop as for an elastic material until the effective stresses reach a yield condition or failure condition. In the latter case the soil can continue to carry additional total stresses within confined zones and pore pressures in these zones will continue to increase. In the former case the soil will continue to deform plastically until it reaches failure, showing, in general, different pore pressure responses in these two phases. Thus pore pressure response at any point in a soft clay deposit under increasing surface loading may show two or three distinct phases, although in some cases the plastic and failure responses may be almost indistinguishable. This report examines three published field records.

Field Instrumentation in Geotechnical Engineering documents the proceedings of a symposium of the same name organized by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. The said symposium covers the developments in the instruments and techniques in field instrumentation. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers the 37 papers included in the symposium, which cover topics such as the measurement of spatial deformations; the measurement of in situ stress and strain for solids, earth pressure and anchor forces; ground round displacement; and techniques and equipment using the surveyors lever. Part 2, on the other hand, covers the sessions during the symposium, which include topics such as different principles of measurement; the application of instrumentation; and interpretation of their results. The text is recommended for those in the field of geotechnical engineering who would like to know more about instrumentation and the processes and techniques involved in it.

Dynamic Response And Deformation Characteristic Of Saturated Soft Clay Under Subway Vehicle Loading written by Yiqun Tang and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-08 with Science categories.
Involving several areas of geological engineering, geotechnical engineering and tunnel engineering, this book describes the soft soil deformation characteristics and dynamic responses induced by subway vibration load. Based on field monitoring and laboratory testing data, with both comprehensive micro-and macroanalysis, the authors present dynamic characteristics and deformation settlement of saturated soft clay surrounding subway tunnels using dynamic and static methodology. Mechanism of deformation, failure in microstructure of soft clay soil, dynamic response, macro deformation and settlement are all discussed and analyzed thoroughly and systematically. Some of the research findings in this book have been widely applied by large subway companies and will have broader application prospects in future. All the above make this book a valuable reference not only for technical engineers working in subway design or construction but also for advanced graduate students. Prof. Yiqun Tang works at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.
