Focuses on the evaluation of seaport planning and development-- criteria, requirements and technology. Analyzes capacity needs in light of new technology and feasibility of future development, and examines the impact of new concepts on the ocean transport industry. Emphasizes the development of a methodology to forecast commodity flow shipping activity, and suggests practical model design for the analysis of different port uses and for optimizing port investment and operational decisions. Covers a range of other topics, including land/water interfaces, intermodal transportation, labor, port master planning, cost/benefit studies, physical developments of ports, and the increasing role of international, multi-national and governmental financing as they affect policy and future development.

Impassable roads, poorly maintained railways, bankrupt airlines, congested cities, and inefficient ports - are there links between these issues and lack of economic progress in developing countries? Inland waterways, ports, railways, roads, air and urban transport are all discussed and illustrated with examples of good and bad practice. The author explains how transport can only be effective if timing, location and technology are chosen carefully and if decisions are in the hands of the right parties.

Inland & Maritime Waterways & Ports: Design, Construction, and Operation covers the proceedings of the technical sessions in the 25th Permanent International Association of Navigation Congress, held in Scotland. This book is organized into two sections encompassing 10 chapters. The first section deals first with means for the protection of banks and bottom waterways against the attack by currents and waves, including those generated by ships. These topics are followed by discussions on methods of increasing waterways capacity and safety; sedimentation reduction and improving and maintaining navigable depths in alluvial channels; integration of ocean-coastal-inland navigation; and improvements of maritime ports and inland terminals. The second section starts with discussions of the developments in the construction of ships, navigational aids, waterways and harbors, traffic management and installations, with particular emphasis on risk analysis and safety criteria regarding transportation, unloading, and storage of liquefied natural and petroleum gases. Other topics covered in this section include economic optimization of the whole dredging cycle; cargo handling systems and equipment; design and construction of port facilities and arrangement of quay platforms; and coastal erosion caused by harbor works and corrective measures. This book will prove useful to design and navigation engineers and researchers.

Port Planning and Management Simulation examines port planning simulation applications, showing how they supports better port decision-making. Using a clear organizational format based on actual port system structure and operation processes, the book provides practical and theoretical insights on port planning and management. The book describes the water, land, collecting and distributing components of the port system, focusing on management, development, and risk mitigation. It examines the key challenges based on discrete system simulation theory that is less affected by local or national regulations. It compares various simulation scenarios for optimal port operational strategy. It quantifies port emissions, analyzes the impact of different reduction strategies, and presents operational strategies for green port planning developmentmand management. Port Planning and Management Simulation provides guidance for carrying out deep analysis in a complex and dynamic system, providing an integrated solution framework based on simulation techniques for improving efficiency and cost savings of the port system. - Bridges the gaps between theory, practice and policy - Comprehensive, practical and multidisciplinary content - Case Studies

Many countries in Africa and Asia have coastlines that present opportunities for them to become gateways for trade between the hinterlands and global trading routes. However, policy makers struggle to translate this potential into engines of economic development and social transformation. In the past 40 years, China has taken advantage of its strategic geographical location and its status as one of the world’s top manufacturing regions. From a very low position on almost all metrics, today China has become home to more than half of the world’s top 50 ports. The rapid development of China’s ports was critical for the country’s remarkable economic growth. What China achieved can be informative; how and why China revived and modernized its port sector is especially relevant and provides valuable lessons for other countries. This book explores the transformation of China’s port sector through four topics and four periods, beginning with China’s major economic reforms that started in 1978. The first topic addresses the links between China’s macroeconomic and regional development strategies and development of the port sector. During this period—through about 1991—China began decentralizing port management to facilitate development of special economic zones. Thesecond topic—during the period 1992 through about 2001—is more specific about the ports and analyzes changes in port governance, including the way in which essential investments were determined and financed. Thethird topic examines the relationship of ports to the cities where they are located and to the hinterlands on which they depend—coinciding with the period 2002†“11. Domestic and international investment resulted in many new export-oriented processing factories during this period. The accompanying boost in trade required further expansion of port capacity. The fourth topic addresses how—from 2011 onward—human resource and innovation policies in the port sector have responded to changing demands as the country looks to become a less resource-dependent and more regionally balanced economy.

This volume presents the report of the Pacem in Maribus Conference on Ports as Nodal Points in the Global Transport System held in Rotterdam in August 1990. Ports are one of the principal interfaces between land and sea, and the main entry and exit points in the global transport system which links the world's nations with more than 70 per cent of the Earth's surface. Discussion centred around the following themes: changes in the world economy; developments in technology; ports and the environment; ports as nodal points; the global transport system; developing countries and the cases of ports together with their roles and needs, and finally, the Port of Rotterdam. The book concludes with four recommendations concerning port management and planning, the environment, international co-operation and also suggestions concerning Africa.
