Here's a superb record of every presidential election in the United States, from the days of George Washington to the struggle between Dewey and Truman. Over 1,000 fascinating pictures vividly illustrate this story of election drama--heroism, scandal, rugged conflict, and stirring ballyhoo. The pictures and text give abundant proof that politics brings out some of our most picturesque--and most American--behavior! Story by story, and picture by picture. author Lorant builds up his striking portrait of an important side of American democracy--our free elections. The forty-two chapters, one for each presidential election and an introductory one on the Creation of Office, make up a lively political history of the United States. With swift, sure strokes Lorant draws in the background of each campaign, portrays the characters of the opposing candidates, and describes the battles that took place. He gives the statistics: always the Electoral vote, and after 1828 the popular vote as well. Thus the reader can quickly see how each state voted for each candidate, the majority by which each election was won, and which Presidents won the popular vote but lost the Electoral vote. The contemporary illustrations do the rest--portraits, engravings, old prints, broadsides, pages of newspapers, facsimiles of letters, hundreds of pungent cartoons, and the best photographs of all the modern campaigns. Lively glimpses of the candidates in action, the rise and fall of parties, vivid bits of historical by-play, election-night scenes, nominating conventions, inaugurations all are here. The portraits of each major candidate for the presidency and vice-presidency from 1789 to 1948 precede each chapter. Never before has the story of presidential elections been so graphically told. This book gives you history at a glance, and will prove as valuable to the historian as to the reader for pleasure.--Jacket.

Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Country Politician: With Frontispiece Portrait Before seeing anything more of English Elections, I passed some years in America, and at a Presidential Election was surprised to find the shrewd Americans behaving like a lot of big babies. Being in Chicago when Abe Lincoln was running for President, I attended a mass meeting in an enormous wooden building that had been run up for the occasion. An effigy of Lincoln was carried in shoulder high, amidst acclamations and tears. The President to be was figured seated on a log into which he was driving wedges with energy disproportioned to the effect. In England such an absurd sight would have been greeted with roars of laughter, but the spectators took it quite seriously, though a more childish exhibition it would be hard to imagine. The leader's portrait, produced in a variety of media (statues, coins, billboards, posters, stamps), is a key instrument of propaganda in totalitarian regimes, but increasingly also dominates political communication in democratic countries as a result of the personalization and spectacularization of campaigning. Written by an international group of contributors, this volume focuses on the last one hundred years, covering a wide range of countries around the globe, and dealing with dictatorial regimes and democratic systems alike. As well as discussing the effigies that are produced by the powers that be for propaganda purposes, it looks at the uses of portraiture by antagonistic groups or movements as forms of resistance, derision, denunciation and demonization. This volume will be of interest to researchers in visual studies, art history, media studies, cultural studies, politics and contemporary history.

Prejudice And The Old Politics written by Allan J. Lichtman and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

Combining statistical analysis with well-written narrative history, this re-evaluation of the 1928 presidential election gives a vivid portrait of the candidates and the campaign. Lichtman has based his study primarily on a statistical analysis of data from that election and the presidential elections from 1916 to 1940 for all the 2,058 counties outside the former Confederate South. Not relying exclusively on the results of his quantitative analysis, however, Lichtman has also made an exhaustive survey of previous scholarship and contemporary accounts of the 1928 election. He discusses and challenges previous interpretations, especially the ethnocultural and pluralist interpretations and the application of critical election theory to the election. In disputing this theory, which claims that 1928 was a realigning election in which the coalitions were formed that dominated future elections, Lichtman determines that 1928 was an aberration with little impact on later political patterns.

A fascinating analysis of two of the most important figures in 1960s American politics, written during their battle for the GOP presidential nomination. Richard Milhous Nixon was one of the most controversial politicians in America’s history: a California congressman, senator, vice president, and president who was forced to resign his position as US Chief Executive because of his role in the scandalous Watergate affair. Nelson Rockefeller was the scion of a phenomenally wealthy American family and longtime governor of New York State. In 1960 they were the leading contenders to win the Republican Party’s nomination for president of the United States, one of whom would face the Democratic challenger, Senator John F. Kennedy, in November’s general election. Written by acclaimed journalist Stewart Alsop during the heat of the political race to the Republican Convention, Nixon & Rockefeller provides a revealing, often surprising dual portrait of two giants of twentieth-century American politics. Alsop, an acknowledged Washington, DC, insider and one of the most esteemed political analysts of his era, explores the backgrounds, mindsets, and distinct personalities, as well as the strengths and failings of these two candidates vying for the highest office in the country. The author’s intelligent and insightful views on the nature of a Nixon presidency versus a Rockefeller presidency make for fascinating reading in light of the political outcome that ultimately was and one that might have been.
