While researching the first Irish Country Houses, David encountered beautiful portraits of former residents in aging mansions and has now compiled a collection of these wonderful stories and photographs. Behind the faces are tales of happiness and misfortune, of royalty, politicians, literary and artistic figures, of scandals and hunt balls. The houses, such as Antrim Castle, Moore Abbey, Lissadell, and Avondale, were built to impress. Many owners were patrons of the arts and commissioned the best artists such as William Orpen, Walter Osborne, and Sarah Purser. Now these portraits capture a way of life that no longer exists and each chapter paints a picture of a bygone age.

The English Country House written by James Peill and has been published by Thames & Hudson this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-31 with categories.

Ranging from Kentchurch Court, a former fortified medieval manor house that has been the seat of the Scudamore family for nearly 1,000 years, to a delightful Strawberry Hill-style Gothic house in rural Cornwall and car-crazed Goodwood House, this beautifully illustrated book showcases ten outstanding British country houses, all still in the hands of the original families. James Peill recounts the ups and downs of such deep-rooted clans as the Cracrofts, landowners in Lincolnshire since the 12th century, whose late 18th-century Hackthorn Hall is a perfect example of the kind of house Jane Austen describes in her novels (indeed, she appears on their family tree), as well as the relatively newly arrived Biddulphs, who constructed Rodmarton, an Arts & Crafts masterpiece, in the first decades of the last century. James Fennell has once again provided superb photographs of a wealth of gardens, charming interiors, bygone sporting trophies, fine art collections and fanciful family memorabilia, making The English Country House a delicious treat for Anglophiles and lovers of old houses.

Architecturally unique and filled with evocative family memorabilia, from commissioned portraits to monogrammed heirloom dinner services to the bells that once summoned the downstairs staff, these houses, like the fictional Downton Abbey, are all real homes and still in the hands of descendants of the original owners. From Kentchurch Court, which has been the seat of the Scudamore family for nearly 1,000 years, to a delightful Gothic house in rural Cornwall to a charming ducal palace to Goodwood House, England's greatest sporting estate, this beautifully illustrated book, now in a new, smaller format, showcases a wealth of gardens, interiors, and fine art collections. James Peill, coauthor of Vendome's The Irish Country House and curator of Goodwood, recounts the ups and downs of the deep-rooted clans who constructed these homes and illuminates the history and legends behind these marvelous estates, many of which have never before been published. James Fennell's evocative photographs bring the homes and their stunning grounds to life. Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, contributes a foreword.

Abandoned Mansions Of Ireland Ii written by Tarquin Blake and has been published by Abandoned Ireland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-15 with Abandoned houses categories.

Following the success of Abandoned Mansions of Ireland, Tarquin Blake documents the crumbling ruins of more forgotten stately homes, such as Elsinore House in County Sligo, where a childhood ghostly encounter inspired a lifelong fascination with the paranormal in W. B. Yeats. The Great Famine triggered a change of fortune for Ireland's landlords: starving, penniless tenants could no longer pay rent and the landowners' luxurious lifestyles went into decline. Later, the Land Acts transferred land into the ownership of tenant farmers and, with their rental income removed, many landlords locked up and left, never to return. Others frittered away the family fortune trying to maintain a luxurious lifestyle. During the War of Independence and Civil War, country houses became a target for the IRA and many were burned. For the remainder of the twentieth century, the increasing expense of maintenance made these opulent houses unviable and hundreds fell into hopeless dereliction. Beautiful, haunting images accompany the histories of the houses and their occupants, to tell a fascinating story of troubled times and private hardships.

Touring And Publicizing England S Country Houses In The Long Eighteenth Century written by Jocelyn Anderson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-22 with Art categories.

Over the course of the long 18th century, many of England's grandest country houses became known for displaying noteworthy architecture and design, large collections of sculptures and paintings, and expansive landscape gardens and parks. Although these houses continued to function as residences and spaces of elite retreat, they had powerful public identities: increasingly accessible to tourists and extensively described by travel writers, they began to be celebrated as sites of great importance to national culture. This book examines how these identities emerged, repositioning the importance of country houses in 18th-century Britain and exploring what it took to turn them into tourist attractions. Drawing on travel books, guidebooks, and dozens of tourists' diaries and letters, it explores what it meant to tour country houses such as Blenheim Palace, Chatsworth, Wilton, Kedleston and Burghley in the tumultuous 1700s. It also questions the legacies of these early tourists: both as a critical cultural practice in the 18th century and an extraordinary and controversial influence in British culture today, country-house tourism is a phenomenon that demands investigation.
