Giorgio Bassani (1916–2000) was a Jewish Italian novelist, poet, essayist, editor, and intellectual. A cosmopolitan writer concerned with the problems of Jewish identity and history, Bassani was deeply affected by the persecution and deportation of Italian Jews under Mussolini. His personal experience of this period and its aftermath was fundamental to the creation of his masterwork, the Romanzo di Ferrara (Romance of Ferrara). In The Drama of the Assimilated Jew, Lucienne Kroha makes Bassani’s personal and literary journey accessible to English-language readers. Kroha’s close, intertextual reading of Bassani’s novels and short stories reveals Bassani’s focus on the issue of Jewish masculinity and his profound engagement with the work of Freud, Nietzsche, and Thomas Mann, whose ideas he appropriated and re-cast to construct the fictional story of his own personal struggle.

Desire for love, desire for knowledge, desire to possess, desire to desire and to be desired: our life is shaped by what we want and by our efforts to achieve it. Hailed by philosophers and psychoanalysts as the core of human identity, desire informs not only our actions, but also our dreams and hopes and their sublimation into art and literature. This collection of essays explores how desire is portrayed in modern and contemporary Italian literature, by analysing some of the most interesting literary figures of the last two centuries. The authors of this collection approach desire from various perspectives – psychoanalytical, sociological, political and semiotic – in order to show that desire, albeit at times not explicitly mentioned, pervades the literary works of modern and contemporary Italy, either as a central theme or as the secret motor of the narrative. Through the fil rouge of desire, the essays of this collection highlight the international dimension of Italian literature, establishing a connection between Italian authors and the major theoretical works of the last two centuries. As the notion of desire, as represented in literary texts, is informed by psychoanalytical and philosophical concepts that operate across the boundaries of nationality and language, modernists and scholars of Comparative Literature will find the papers in this book of considerable interest.

Porta, Leopardi, Cesare Cantù, Nievo, Valera, Slataper, Saba, Quasimodo, Pozzi, Pasolini, Fenoglio, Calvino: a questi autori della nostra letteratura – oltre che alle poetiche del neorealismo – sono dedicati i saggi e i ritratti qui riuniti per la prima volta in volume. Alcuni scritti risalgono ad anni che sembrano ormai lontani, ma conservano un forte grado di attualità grazie all’importanza stessa dei testi analizzati e alla dirimente originalità delle interpretazioni. Scelte stilistiche e strutturali, svolte ideologiche e vicende editoriali vengono illustrate nella loro specificità esemplare, senza che venga mai perso di vista il quadro complessivo da cui trassero motivazione; il giudizio storico ed estetico si fonda sulla ricostruzione di una trama di rapporti culturali e psicologici assai ramificata, non di rado sorprendente. Di Porta si scoprono le svolte anche ideologiche, i Canti leopardiani vengono riletti alla luce dell’ordinamento complessivo in cui vennero calati, nei romanzi di Cantù si colgono tensioni e contraddizioni finora sottovalutate, la nascita delle Confessioni di Nievo viene posta in rapporto con la crisi del mazziniano Partito d’Azione, delle aspre denunce che innervano la narrativa uscita dalla penna dello scapigliato Valera si indagano cause, virtù, limiti … Diversa l’impostazione dei singoli pezzi, costante la ricerca di una chiarezza espositiva che prescinda da lungaggini e da inutili tecnicismi. Il critico si pone al servizio del lettore, mira a coinvolgerlo nel colloquio con personalità e opere che ci offrono un viatico prezioso: interrogativi e risposte che riguardano la convivenza civile non meno che la nostra esistenziale inquietudine.
