The first conference in this series, devoted principally to the interaction of positrons in gases, was held at York University, Toronto, in July 1981 immediately preceding the XII ICPEAC in Gatlinburg, and the proceedings were published in the Canadian Journal of Physics, volume 60 (1982). So successful was this meeting that the decision was taken to hold a second one around the time of XIII ICPEAC in Berlin in 1983. London was clearly a convenient location but, rather than the obvious choice of University College London in central London, the Organising Committee decided that the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Royal Holloway College would provide a more pleasant and intimate atmosphere for a small meeting. Even a small conference requires substantial sums of money to pay the expenses of invited speakers and when considering possible sources of funds the Organising Committee recognised that the intended format of the meeting and the international composition of the participants made it appropriate to apply to the NATO Science Committee for support under the Advanced Research Workshop Programme. This was one of the few successful applications made this year, and so it was that the conference became the 'NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Positron Scattering in Gases'. The Workshop, with approximately sixty participants, started after lunch on 19 July, 1983 and finished at mid-day on 23 July.

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Atomic Physics with Positrons, which was held at University College London during 15-18 July 1987, was the fourth meeting in a series devoted to the general theme of positron colli sions in gases. Previous meetings have been held at York University, Toronto (1981); Royal Holloway College, Egham (1983) and Wayne State Uni versity, Detroit (1985). Recent very significant improvements in positron beam currents, due to the development of more efficient moderators and the use of more intense positron sources, are making possible an increasingly sophisticated range of experiments in atomic collision physics. Whereas a few years ago only total scattering cross sections could be determined, measurements can now be made of various partial and differential cross sections. Intense positron beams are also being used to produce positronium beams and already, as reported here, preliminary investigations have been made of collisions of positronium with several target systems. These experimental developments have stimulated, and been stimulated by, steady, if somewhat less spectacu1ar,progress in associated theoretical studies. Both aspects of the field are well represented in these Proceed ings.

A detailed understanding of the behaviour of positrons and electrons as they pass through liquids is critical for a number of applications, from positron emission tomography and ion therapy to cosmic ray detectors and materials characterisation. In particular, transport in liquid water is vital for medical applications because of its similarity to human tissue, and is an area of continued research. This thesis presents newly measured experimental cross sections for positrons in water as well as several Monte Carlo simulation techniques aimed at improving our models of positron and electron transport. In particular, special efforts have been made to model the effects of elastic coherent scattering, which arise due to the position and velocity correlations between molecules in liquids and other dense media. The experimental scattering results include the first measurements of integral and differential elastic positron cross sections for water vapour, as well as detailed grand total and positronium formation cross sections for the same. Performed on the positron beamline apparatus at the Australian National University, this transmission experiment passed a high-resolution beam of positrons through a scattering cell containing water vapour. The parallel component of the energy of the positrons after scattering was analysed to determine the ratio between the scattered and unscattered portions of the beam, from which absolute total cross sections were calculated. The experiment further utilised a differentiated magnetic field to separate elastic scattering from the other scattering processes, and to distinguish between scattering angles in order to measure angle-differential cross sections. An original Monte Carlo track-structure simulation code has been written which aims to precisely model the transport behaviour of electrons and positrons in dilute gases, dense gases and liquids. This simulation incorporates several new features to improve its ability to model systems with high particle loss rates, varying electric fields and fully-differential ionisation interactions. Each feature has been rigorously tested against benchmark systems from the literature and, where necessary, against Boltzmann equation solutions of new benchmark systems. The simulation has also been applied to model elements of the positron trapping apparatus which is a critical component of the positron scattering experiment. The simulation's validity has been extended beyond dilute gases by including a treatment of the coherent elastic scattering that is caused by the structure of dense media. Following the theories of Van Hove, Cohen and Lekner, either a static or dynamic structure factor can be combined with gas-phase cross sections to form a modified scattering cross section that partially accounts for the temporal and spatial correlations of nearby molecules. The benchmarked Monte Carlo simulation techniques are then used to calculate transport profiles for positrons in liquid water, using the measured water cross sections. These profiles are estimates of the spatial distributions of positronium formation and energy deposition, from the positrons' emission until their first positronium formation event. Comparisons between simulations employing different cross section sets demonstrate the importance of a complete and accurate set of scattering cross sections for positrons in water.

The Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Linking the Gaseous and Condensed Phases of Matter: The Behavior of Slow Electrons" was held at Patras, Greece, September 5-18, 1993. The organizers of the Patras ASI felt that the study of the electronic properties of matter in various states of aggregation has advanced to a point where further progress required the interfacing of the phases of matter in order to find out and to understand how the microscopic and macroscopic properties of materials and processes change as we go from low pressure gas to the condensed phase. This volume is the outgrowth of a workshop held in October, 2000 at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at the Harvard- Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA. The aim of this book (similar in theme to the workshop) is to present an overview of new directions in antimatter physics and chemistry research. The emphasis is on positron and positronium interactions both with themselves and with ordinary matter. The timeliness of this subject comes from several considerations. New concepts for intense positron sources and the development of positron accumulators and trap-based positron beams provide qualitatively new experimental capabilities. On the theoretical side, the ability to model complex systems and complex processes has increased dramatically in recent years, due in part to progress in computational physics. There are presently an intriguing variety of phenomena that await theoretical explanation. It is virtually assured that the new experimental capabilities in this area will lead to a rapid expansion of this list. This book is organized into four sections: The first section discusses potential new experimental capabilities and the uses and the progress that might be made with them. The second section discusses topics involving antihydrogen and many-body phenomena, including Bose condensation of positronium atoms and positron interactions with materials.
