Das Buch beschreibt diese Folgen und setzt sie zur intellektuellen Situation nach dem Zusammenbruch des Sozialismus ins Verhältnis: zur Esoterik utopischen Denkens, zum Gefühl der Exilierung, zur Agonie der Kritik und zum »Ende der Geschichte". Stephan Pabst stellt mit Heiner Müller, Wolfgang Hilbig, Reinhard Jirgl und Durs Grünbein Autoren ins Zentrum seiner Untersuchung, die die Post-DDR-Literatur in den 1990er und frühen 2000er Jahren entscheidend prägten, fragt aber auch nach dem diskursiven Muster, dem ihre Bedeutung entsprang. Eine alt-bundesrepublikanisch geprägte Kritik reproduzierte an ihnen die Differenz modern/postmodern und gab so den Blick auf deren Erschöpfung frei.

This volume contributes to the fields of lyric poetry and poetics (especially poetic form), aesthetics, and German literature by intervening in debates on the social functions, cognitive and emotional effects, and the value of poetry. It builds on, and moves beyond, previous theories of rhythm to tie meter more particularly to the specificities of poetic language in blending of embodied responses, cultural situations, and linguistic particularities. The book examines the German-language tradition across three centuries, arguing that the interdisciplinarity and richness of metrical theory and practice emerge in the heterogeneity of poetry and its defenders in their specific historical moments. Focusing on Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Durs Grünbein, the book contextualizes each in the metrical and aesthetic debates of his epoch, showing how questions of meter are linked with overarching poetic goals such as the relationship between form and meaning, the adaptation of the Classical past for German literature, and the ways poetry's sounds work in the body. It argues that Klopstock's, Nietzsche's, and Grünbein's metrical theory and practice offer valuable insights for thinking about the ways poetry works and why it matters.

In der Beschäftigung mit den jeweiligen Erinnerungs- und Gedächtniskonzeptionen an die DDR verfolgt die Arbeit, wie die literarischen Selbstentwürfe keineswegs auf feste Identitäten abzielen, sondern in narrativen Prozessen der Identifizierung ständig wandelnde ostdeutsche Selbstbilder entwerfen. Dabei spielen verschiedene Bezugsrahmen eine zentrale Rolle: Globalisierungserfahrungen, Photographie, Utopien, essayistische Selbstentwürfe, intertextuelle Beziehungen zur Literatur der Moderne, der Psychoanalyse und der Kritischen Theorie etc. Neben den genannten Werken gibt die Arbeit weiträumige Einblicke in das jeweilige Gesamtœuvre Wolfs und Grünbeins und zeigt, wie sich Selbsterfahrungen in der Post-DDR-Literatur ausbilden. This book examines the controversial younger generation of poets who were 'born into' the established socialist state of the German Democratic Republic. Introducing an extraordinary decade of GDR poetry, it focuses on the ways in which this experience is translated into the metaphorical and linguistic structures of their texts, and the ways in which they set about breaking the literary and political boundaries which were imposed upon them, radicalizing notions of the subject, of history, of language, of the poetic enterprise itself. The volume also assesses what will remain - after the fall of the Wall, and the revelations of the 'Stasi' files - of this radical poetic project. This unique study examines the poetry of some fifty writers from both the official and the underground publishing scenes, offering them up as a case-study in the vexed negotiations between aesthetics, ethics, and politics, and as a contribution to the rewriting of German literary history after 1945.
