Broken Voices is the first English-language book on Korea’s rich folksong heritage, and the first major study of the effects of Japanese colonialism on the intangible heritage of its former colony. Folksongs and other music traditions continue to be prominent in South Korea, which today is better known for its technological prowess and the Korean Wave of popular entertainment. In 2009, many Koreans reacted with dismay when China officially recognized the folksong Arirang, commonly regarded as the national folksong in North and South Korea, as part of its national intangible cultural heritage. They were vindicated when versions from both sides of the DMZ were included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity a few years later. At least on a national level, folksongs thus carry significant political importance. But what are these Korean folksongs about, and who has passed them on over the years, and how? Broken Voices describes how the major repertoires were transmitted and performed in and around Seoul. It sheds light on the training and performance of professional entertainment groups and singers, including kisaeng, the entertainment girls often described as Korean geisha. Personal stories of noted singers describe how the colonial period, the media, the Korean War, and personal networks have affected work opportunities and the standardization of genres. As the object of resentment (and competition) and a source of creative inspiration, the image of Japan has long affected the way in which Koreans interpret their own culture. Roald Maliangkay describes how an elaborate system of heritage management was first established in modern Korea and for what purposes. His analysis uncovers that folksong traditions have changed significantly since their official designation; one major change being gender representation and its effect on sound and performance. Ultimately, Broken Voices raises an important issue of cultural preservation—traditions that fail to attract practitioners and audiences are unsustainable, so compromises may be unwelcome, but imperative.

In Unveiling Traditions Anouar Majid issues a challenge to the West to reimagine Islam as a progressive world culture and a participant in the building of a multicultural and more egalitarian world civilization. From within the highly secularized space it inhabits, a space endemically suspicious of religion, the West must find a way, writes Majid, to embrace Islamic societies as partners in building a more inclusive and culturally diverse global community. Majid moves beyond Edward Said’s unmasking of orientalism in the West to examine the intellectual assumptions that have prevented a more nuanced understanding of Islam’s legacies. In addition to questioning the pervasive logic that assumes the “naturalness” of European social and political organizations, he argues that it is capitalism that has intensified cultural misunderstanding and created global tensions. Besides examining the resiliency of orientalism, the author critically examines the ideologies of nationalism and colonialist categories that have redefined the identity of Muslims (especially Arabs and Africans) in the modern age and totally remapped their cultural geographies. Majid is aware of the need for Muslims to rethink their own assumptions. Addressing the crisis in Arab-Muslim thought caused by a desire to simultaneously “catch up” with the West and also preserve Muslim cultural authenticity, he challenges Arab and Muslim intellectuals to imagine a post-capitalist, post-Eurocentric future. Critical of Islamic patriarchal practices and capitalist hegemony, Majid contends that Muslim feminists have come closest to theorizing a notion of emancipation that rescues Islam from patriarchal domination and resists Eurocentric prejudices. Majid’s timely appeal for a progressive, multicultural dialogue that would pave the way to a polycentric world will interest students and scholars of postcolonial, cultural, Islamic, and Marxist studies.

Decolonizing Theory: Thinking across Traditions aims at disentangling theory from its exclusively Western provenance, drawing insights and concepts from other thought traditions, connecting to what it argues is a new global moment in the reconstitution of theory. The key argument, which is the point of departure of the book, is that any serious theorizing in the non-West should be fundamentally suspicious of any theory that only gives you one result-that four-fifths of the world does not and cannot do anything right. Everything in the non-West, from its modernity and secularism to its democracy and even capitalism, is always seen to be deficient. In other words, all it tells us is that we do not live up to the standards set by Western modernity. From this point of departure, it seeks to create a conceptual space outside (Western) modernity and capitalism, by insisting on a rethink of non-synchronous synchronicities. The book takes three key themes around which the whole story of modernity can be unraveled, namely the question of the political, capital and historical time, and secularism for a detailed discussion. It does so by bracketing, in a sense, the autobiographical story that Western modernity gives itself. In each case, it tries to show that past forms never simply disappear, without residue, to be fully supplanted by the modern, and merely applying theory produced in one context to another is, therefore, very misleading.

Im zeitgenössischen Ozeanien spielen die Beziehungen zwischen Tradition, Identität und Wandel eine wichtige Rolle, insbesondere in der Rhetorik gegenwärtiger politischer Diskurse. Das dem Begriff Tradition inhärente Verhältnis zur Vergangenheit ist stark vom jeweiligen kolonialen Umgang mit der indigenen Kultur geprägt und schlägt sich in den gegenwärtigen Konstruktionen von Tradition nieder. Aus einer vom Autor bevorzugten konstruktivistischen Perspektive betrachtet, ist Tradition stets als selektive Darstellung vergangener kultureller Praktiken zu verstehen, die von den Akteuren den gegenwärtigen Kontexten entsprechend aufgewertet, beibehalten oder zurückgewiesen werden. In Fiji vollzog sich durch den Prozess der Dekolonialisierung in den 1960er Jahren eine theoretische Gleichstellung verschiedener ethnischer Bevölkerungsgruppen unter dem politischen Konstrukt einer gemeinsamen fijianischen Nation. Seit der Unabhängigkeit Fijis im Jahr 1970 ist Fiji eine souveräne multiethnische Nation, in der in erster Linie das Verhältnis zwischen den autochthonen Fijianern und den Indo-Fijianern – beide Bevölkerungsgruppen bilden in etwa einen äquivalenten Anteil der Gesamtbevölkerung – die politischen Diskurse prägt. Diese besondere machtpolitische Konstellation ist ein Produkt des Prozesses der Kolonialisierung, der seine Schatten noch immer auf die postkoloniale Politik Fijis wirft. Die starke soziale Hierarchisierung, besonders die Privilegierung indigener politischer Eliten schließt einen Großteil der Bevölkerung Fijis von einer aktiven politischen Teilnahme aus. Angesichts der andauernden politischen Unruhen seit dem Wahlsieg einer multiethnischen Koalition im Jahr 1987 und den darauffolgenden Militärputschen durch fijianische Nationalisten, beherrschen die interethnischen Spannungen auch weiterhin die politischen Diskurse in Fiji. Im Jahr 2000 kam es erneut zu einem nationalistischen Putsch mit militärischer Unterstützung, der eine demokratisch gewählte multiethnische Regierung gewaltsam ihres Amtes enthob und dessen Folgen bis heute die Aufmerksamkeit der internationalen Öffentlichkeit erwecken. Im Zusammenhang der interethnischen Spannungen zwischen Fijianern und Indo-Fijianern betont die gegenwärtige Konstruktion fijianischer Tradition eindeutig die Kontinuität mit der (kolonialen) Vergangenheit, wodurch die Privilegierung der indigenen Eliten gegenüber den Machtansprüchen der indo-fijianischen, aber auch gegenüber der breiten Masse der indigenen Bevölkerung legitimiert wird. Hinsichtlich der historischen Transformationsprozesse wird die theoretische Perspektive des Konstruktivismus der Analyse dynamischer Prozesse sozio-kulturellen Wandels gerecht. Demzufolge stellt sie in dieser Arbeit die theoretische Grundlage der Analyse einer in den gegenwärtigen politischen Kontexten artikulierten fijianischen Tradition dar. Vor dem Hintergrund der interethnischen Spannungen seit den politischen Ereignissen von 1987 ist eine analytische Betrachtung des Gebrauchs und der Darstellung von Tradition angesichts der Vielschichtigkeit des fijianischen Ethnonationalismus angebracht. Dem Konzept Tradition wird in diesem Zusammenhang eine große strategische Bedeutung zugeschrieben, nicht zuletzt um sich von anderen Bevölkerungsgruppen, wie Europäern und Indern zu distanzieren. Hinter der vordergründigen Kulisse des interethnischen Konflikts existieren jedoch auch innerhalb der indigenen Bevölkerung sozio-politische Differenzen, die zu internen Dissenzen um Tradition und die politische Führung führen. Trotz des hohen Stellenwerts des ethnonationalistischen Diskurses in der medialen Öffentlichkeit, setzen sich die ethnischen Gruppen keineswegs homogen zusammen. Aus dieser Komplexität der sozialen und politischen Konstellation im postkolonialen Fiji stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern Tradition im postkolonialen politischen Kontext der multikulturellen Nation Fijis von Bedeutung ist: unter welchen historischen Voraussetzungen, von welcher Seite und in welchen politischen Zusammenhängen werden Tradition und Identität artikuliert. Die komplexe Thematik wird in der vorliegenden Studie hinsichtlich der Fragestellung nach der Bedeutung von Tradition im politischen Kontext dezidiert untersucht.
