Obwohl der systemische Diskurs Sozialer Arbeit seit einigen Jahren zunehmend an Reflexivität gewinnt, bleibt die Frage nach einer theoretisch avancierten Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse der maßgeblichen systemischen Theorien Sozialer Arbeit nach wie vor unbeantwortet. Das zentrale Anliegen des vorliegenden Buches besteht in diesem Kontext darin, sich auf einer metawissenschaftlichen Ebene mit drei der wirkmächtigsten Theorien in diesem Fachdiskurs auseinanderzusetzen: dem systemistisch-emergentistischen Ansatz von Werner Obrecht, Silvia Staub-Bernasconi u.a., dem radikalkonstruktivistischen Ansatz von Björn Kraus und dem postmodernistisch-systemtheoretischen Ansatz von Heiko Kleve. Die ausgewählten Ansätze werden in den ersten drei Kapiteln übersichtlich dargestellt und ausführlich diskutiert. Orientiert an der Referenztheorie des Interaktionistischen Konstruktivismus entwirft der Autor im vierten Kapitel die Umrisse einer alternativen systemischen Theorie Sozialer Arbeit. In diesem Ansatz wird ein umfangreiches Instrumentarium bereitgestellt, das geeignet ist, im systemischen Diskurs der Gegenwart neue Akzente zu setzen. Ralf W. Westhofen (geb. 1968) leitet seit 2006 eine Niederlassung der 'Mülheimer Kontakte e.V.' im Fachbereich Betreutes Wohnen in Mönchengladbach. Studium der Sozialarbeit an der Fachhochschule Düsseldorf. Promotion an der Humanwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität zu Köln im April 2012. Seit 2003 tätig als Sozialarbeiter in der ambulanten Psychiatrie.

In this monumental book, sociologist Robert Castel reconstructs the history of what he calls "the social question," or the ways in which both labor and social welfare have been organized from the Middle Ages onward to contemporary industrial society. Throughout, the author identifies two constants bearing directly on the question of who is entitled to relief and who can be excluded: the degree of embeddedness in any given community and the ability to work. Along this dual axis the author locates virtually the entire history of social welfare in early-modern and contemporary Europe.This work is a systematic defense of the meaningfulness of the category of "the social," written in the tradition of Foucault, Durkheim, and Marx. Castel imaginatively builds on Durkheim's insight into the essentially social basis of work and welfare. Castel populates his sociological framework with vivid characterizations of the transient lives of the "disaffiliated": those colorful itinerants whose very existence proved such a threat to the social fabric of early-modern Europe. Not surprisingly, he discovers that the cruel and punitive measures often directed against these marginal figures are deeply implicated in the techniques and institutions of power and social control.The author also treats the flipside of the problem of social assistance: namely, matters of work and wage-labor. Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?

Data, methods and theories of contemporary social science can be applied to resolve how political outcomes in democratic societies determine the quality of life that citizens experience. Radcliff seeks to provide an objective answer to the debate between left and right over what public policies best contribute to people leading positive and rewarding lives. Radcliff offers an empirical answer, relying on the same canons of reason and evidence required of any other issue amenable to study through social-scientific means. The analysis focuses on the consequences of three specific political issues: the welfare state and the general size of government, labor organization, and state efforts to protect workers and consumers through economic regulation. The results indicate that in each instance, the program of the Left best contributes to citizens leading more satisfying lives and, critically, that the benefits of greater happiness accrue to everyone in society, rich and poor alike.
