Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Medizin - Therapie, Note: 1,0, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Laut UNHCR-Jahresbericht sind knapp 60 Millionen Menschen auf der Flucht vor Kriegen, Konflikten und Verfolgung. Die meisten kommen aus Syrien, Afghanistan, dem Irak und Somalia. Die Hälfte der Flüchtlinge sind Minderjährige. Viele werden konfrontiert mit dem Verlust der Eltern und Geschwister, sehen zu wie andere Flüchtlinge sterben, müssen permanent selbst Angst um das eigene Leben haben oder erfahren Gewalt. Endlich im Aufnahmeland vermeintlich in Sicherheit, müssen sie mit dem Gefühl der Isolation und Entwurzelung leben und sich den Herausforderungen der Integration in eine für sie fremde Kultur stellen. Solch traumatische Ereignisse hinterlassen oft tiefe seelische Wunden. Auf der Homepage der Bundes Psychotherapeuten Kammer wird in einem BPtK-Standpunkt darauf hingewiesen, dass Studien, die mit Kindern von Flüchtlingen in Deutschland durchgeführt wurden, belegen, dass nahezu die Hälfte der Kinder deutlich psychisch belastet ist. Sensibilisiert durch mein Studium der Kunsttherapie, fühle ich mich zur Thematik hingezogen. Seit März 2016 unterstütze ich deshalb im Rahmen eines Praxisprojektes einen gemeinnützigen Verein, der humanitäre Hilfe für syrische Flüchtlinge in Bursa (Türkei) leistet. Unter anderem angeregt durch die Veröffentlichung Imagination als heilsame Kraft von Luise Reddemann, biete ich Workshops für Kinder in Form von künstlerischen Interventionen, die über gezielte Themenstellungen stabilisierende Erfahrungen ansprechen. Nicht jedes traumatische Ereignis führt zwangsläufig zu einer Traumafolgestörung. Aber ich stelle mir oft die Frage, wie viele Kinder das oft Unaussprechliche des Erlebten nicht verarbeiten können.

Ethical loneliness is the experience of being abandoned by humanity, compounded by the cruelty of wrongs not being acknowledged. It is the result of multiple lapses on the part of human beings and political institutions that, in failing to listen well to survivors, deny them redress by negating their testimony and thwarting their claims for justice. Jill Stauffer examines the root causes of ethical loneliness and how those in power revise history to serve their own ends rather than the needs of the abandoned. Out of this discussion, difficult truths about the desire and potential for political forgiveness, transitional justice, and political reconciliation emerge. Moving beyond a singular focus on truth commissions and legal trials, she considers more closely what is lost in the wake of oppression and violence, how selves and worlds are built and demolished, and who is responsible for re-creating lives after they are destroyed. Stauffer boldly argues that rebuilding worlds and just institutions after violence is a broad obligation and that those who care about justice must first confront their own assumptions about autonomy, liberty, and responsibility before an effective response to violence can take place. In building her claims, Stauffer draws on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, Jean Améry, Eve Sedgwick, and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as concrete cases of justice and injustice across the world.

Paul Lerner traces the intertwined histories of trauma and male hysteria in German society and psychiatry and shows how these concepts were swept up into debates about Germany's national health, economic productivity, and military strength in the years surrounding World War I. From a growing concern with industrial accidents in the 1880s through the shell shock "epidemic" of the war, male hysteria seemed to bespeak the failings of German masculinity. In response, psychiatrists struggled to turn male-hysterical bodies into fit workers and loyal political subjects. Medical approaches to trauma valorized work and productivity as standards of male health, and psychiatric treatment--whether through hypnosis, electric current, or suggestion--concentrated on turning debilitated soldiers into symptom-free workers. These concerns endured through the Weimar period, as "nervous veterans" competed for disability compensation amid the republic's political crises and economic upheavals. Hysterical Men shows how wartime psychiatry furthered the process of medical rationalization. Lerner views this not as a precursor to the brutalities of Nazi-era psychiatry, but rather as characteristic of a more general medicalized modernity. The author asserts, however, that psychiatry's continual skepticism toward trauma resonated powerfully with the radical right's celebration of war and violence and its supposedly salutary effects on men and nations.

Neurasthenia, meaning nerve weakness, was ‘invented’ in the United States as a disorder of modernity, caused by the fast pace of urban life. Soon after, from the early 1880s onwards, this modern disease crossed the Atlantic. Neurasthenia became much less ‘popular’ in Britain or the Netherlands than in Germany. Neurasthenia’s heyday continued into the first decade of the twentieth century. The label referred to conditions similar to those currently labelled as chronic fatigue syndrome.
