Engaging and informative, 'Poussin's Arcadian Vision' offers an explanation for the ingenious symbolism recently discovered in French Baroque painter Poussin's Les Bergers d'Arcadie. A convincing argument unfolds concerning the interaction between Poussin's personal views on religion and spirituality and the larger intersections of symbolism, religion and politics prevalent among intellectuals in seventeenth century Europe. How the symbolic heritage of Western esoteric tradition influenced Poussin's work is explored in detail. The findings place Poussin within a discrete network of intellectual circles frequented by some of the greatest minds of the era. With the hindsight of art history, a greater understanding of the status of Les Bergers d'Arcadie is garnered especially its subliminal use of sophisticated themes in symbolism found in art of the period. This analysis of Les Bergers d'Arcadie investigates the specific role of sacred geometry and numerology, common elements in the philosophical language of religion and politics of the time, and speculates as to how the deeply coded composition may act as a visual tool for personal enlightenment. Woven into the discussion of symbolism in art is a commentary on the role of pastoral ideas on seventeenth and eighteenth century religion and spirituality, and how specific details within Les Bergers d'Arcadie, such as the inscription 'Et in Arcadia Ego', demonstrate Poussin's role in the contemporary intellectual search for an elusive Golden Age. This new philosophical look at art history, however, also reveals how Poussin's work can be interpreted in the twenty-first century. Decrypting its symbolism could reveal the true nature of the spiritual treasure of Rennes-le-Chateau, one of the great mysteries that in recent history has defied convincing explanation.

Employing the methodologies of the new art history as well as some tools provided by poststructuralism, historiography, and analytic philosophy, Poussin's Paintings offers a novel approach to the art of Poussin. David Carrier begins with a comprehensive analysis of Poussin's self-portraits, which provides the starting point for a critical discussion of the traditional strategies of Poussin scholarship and for an evaluation of the status of this artist. Carrier shows that Poussin can be properly understood only by seeing how his visual and political culture differs from ours. Carrier examines the traditional approaches of Poussin scholars, noting the limitations of their views and showing how they not only shape our image of the artist but also restrict out ability to properly grasp his concerns. Carrier also considers the important conceptual claims of connoisseurs and reveals how their work invokes an implicit theory of Poussin's development. Carrier then focuses on a group of paintings concerned with erotic themes, demonstrating the inadequacy of traditional accounts of these pictures. He extends his analysis to a discussion of Poussin's landscapes, which have a different and more important place in his development than the older accounts claim. Carrier places Poussin within the artistic and political culture of seventeenth-century Rome. He asserts that artists of the time were concerned with the problem of belatedness and that Poussin attempted to return to the tradition of the High Renaissance, reworking images from that tradition in response to his own visual culture. Carrier argues that Poussin's art is thus best understood as a response to that setting for baroque art, and he relates Poussin's work to the later tradition of French history painting.

This volume investigates the diverse applications and conceptions of the term ‘The Golden Age’. The phrase resonates with the theme of nostalgia, which is popularly understood as a wistful longing for the past, but which also denotes homesickness and the unrecoverability of the past. While the term ‘Golden Age’ typically conjures up idealised visions of the past and gestures forward to utopian visions of future golden ages, the idea of nostalgia is suggestive of a discontented present. The Golden Age and nostalgia are therefore related ideas, but are also partly in conflict with one another, as many nostalgic sentiments are not idealised, and may indeed be dark, ironic or self-aware. There are, of course, many other ways to characterise the relationship between the Golden Age and nostalgia, and the tension between the two can produce myths and romantic idylls, or, in religious terms, images of pre-lapsarian innocence, or dogmas relating to values associated with childhood. The Golden Age is also often used to refer to specific, respected periods of cultural production in all kinds of literature and visual media. Indeed, nearly every period, genre, nation, and cultural form has some kind of mythic, often illusory, Golden Age against which it is defined, and in which nostalgia often plays a part. This collection interrogates the notion of the Golden Age and its connection to feelings of nostalgia from a range of interdisciplinary perspectives, with a strong focus on the relationship between word and image. It will interest scholars working on the subject of the Golden Age/nostalgia, particularly in English literature, film studies, comics studies, history, and the fine arts.

Arcadian Visions provides an alternative landscape history for all those involved with the landscape - either through its design, management, use or enjoyment. It begins by examining the origins of Arcadia and the pastoral in the classical poetry of Theocritus and Virgil, and the effects of, and on, Christianity before outlining its development in renaissance Italy and subsequently in the Netherlands, America and England. It concludes by looking at how Arcadian ecology is bringing about a reappraisal of the pastoral in the 21st century.
