The electrical power grid is a physical network that allows electricity to be delivered to its customers. This network consists of three stages of generation, transmission, and distribution. Distribution system is the final stage of the process where the customers are connected. Reliability of a system is the ability of that system to operate under expected conditions for a specific amount of time. This parameter can be estimated based on the historical performance of the system with a fixed state of characteristics. Therefore, reliability can be defined as the probability of a system to succeed in performing a task in the near future. With the increasing integration of distributed generation (DG) and Islanding capabilities of the power distribution system, utilities are challenged with new system characteristics and analysis methods when it comes to modeling the reliability of the system. Therefore, a comprehensive model for the future of the distribution system is required to take advantage of the DG in order to reduce power interruption and maximize reliability. The purpose of this thesis paper is to provide a universal and comprehensive scheme that optimizes distribution system reliability by implementing the Islanding-Enabled Optimal Switch Placement method which can be applied to any distribution system with integrated DG.
