Power in the Portrayal unveils a fresh and vital perspective on power relations in eleventh- and twelfth-century Muslim Spain as reflected in historical and literary texts of the period. Employing the methods of the new historical literary study in looking at a range of texts, Ross Brann reveals the paradoxical relations between the Andalusi Muslim and Jewish elites in an era when long periods of tolerance and respect were punctuated by outbreaks of tension and hostility. The examined Arabic texts reveal a fragmented perception of the Jew in eleventh-century al-Andalus. They depict seemingly contradictory figures at whose poles are an intelligent, skilled, and noble Jew deserving of homage and a vile, stupid, and fiendish enemy of God and Islam. For their part, the Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic texts display a deep-seated reluctance to portray Muslims in any light at all. Brann cogently demonstrates that these representations of Jews and Muslims--each of which is concerned with issues of sovereignty and the exercise of power--reflect the shifting, fluctuating, and ambivalent relations between elite members of two of the ethno-religious communities of al-Andalus. Brann's accessible prose is enriched by his splendid translations; the original texts are also included. This book is the first to study the construction of social meaning in Andalusi Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, and Hebrew literary texts and historical chronicles. The novel approach illuminates nuances of respect, disinterest, contempt, and hatred reflected in the relationship between Muslims and Jews in medieval Spain.

Runner-up for the 2017-18 AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Publication Prize This book examines how anxieties about colonial power and national identity are reflected in Spanish literature, journalism, and photography of Moroccan Muslim and Jewish cultures during the Spanish colonisation of Northern Morocco from 1909 to 1927. This understudied period, known as the Rif War, is highly significant because of its role in shaping the identities that came into conflict in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). Furthermore, the book makes a key contribution to Spanish colonial studies by offering a comparative analysis of Spanish representations of the Iberian Peninsula's cultural and historical relationship with Moroccan Muslims and Jews in this context, showing how conflicting visions of Spanish identity are portrayed through and in relation to them.

This book analyses the dominant imagery related to migration and illustrates how framing of migrants as subjects viewed through the lens of the host gaze positions them for exclusion and marginalisation. It focuses on comparative sources derived from public and media visual campaigns focusing on migration issues. It illustrates how the ethical gap that the host-centric way of looking creates results in the growing suspicion of the migrant and how this ethical gap broadens and impacts on the legal exclusion of migrants as legal subjects.

The 13 essays presented here shed new light on the role of panegyric in the western and eastern Roman Empire in the late antique world. Introductory chapters give an overview of panegyrical theory and practice, followed by studies of major writers of the early empire and the anonymous Panegyrici latini. The core of the volume deals with prose and verse panegyric under the Christian Roman Empire (4th-7th century): key themes addressed are social and political context, the 'hidden agenda', and the impact of Christianity on the pagan tradition of the panegyric, including the portrayal of patriarchs and holy men.

Awakening The Sleeping Tiger Within written by Anne Marie Ameri, Ph.d. and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-09 with categories.

Why do media and politicians voice inflammatory rhetoric and false stereotyping of Muslims and other disenfranchised groups? In her provocative book, "Awakening the Sleeping Tiger Within," Dr. Ameri discloses the reasons. She invites readers to hone their critical thinking skills and question the agenda and inaccuracies of those who control governments and commercial communications. She addresses false stereotypes spread by Islamophobes and dispels myths and mischaracterizations. To further motivate readers to begin questioning, she presents little known information and demonstrates how the media narrative is biased. Based on meticulous research, Dr. Ameri describes how repealing media regulations allows wealthy conglomerates to present one-sided reporting in order to benefit and perpetuate an unbalanced power structure. Dr. Ameri reveals information about the War on Terror, the Boston Bombing, Israel's role in Syria, and the relationships between Palestine, Israel, and the U.S. She examines U.S. financial and military aid to Israel. The subsequent effect of trillions of U.S. dollars misspent on wars in the Middle East directly impacts the crumbling U.S. infrastructure, the decline in quality education, and the accelerating rate of poverty and hunger. She describes the psychological and physiological warfare perpetrated by federal agencies to entrap and make pawns of young Muslims and thus promote sensationalized news stories that continue to produce false sweeping generalizations about Islam. Touching human interest stories are recounted of innocent Muslim families who have been torn apart by unwarranted, invasive, long-term governmental investigations. Along with these revelations and others, Dr. Ameri presents the good news that is not usually communicated through mainstream media: seldom-broadcast viewpoints of Jewish, anti-Zionist or anti-the-occupation, groups, and individuals whose political positions and humanitarian activities are drawing attention and, therefore, bringing about positive change in the U.S. and the Middle East. Her objective is to inspire readers to awaken from passivity and transform their thoughts into action by uniting with other groups to create peaceful, positive change in the power structure.
