Effective policy is vital for creating greener economies, new jobs and industries, for securing energy supplies and for protecting the climate and environment. As renewable energy is fundamental to achieving all of these objectives, it too needs the best possible policy to drive it. Feed-in tariffs have proven to deliver the fastest, most cost-effective and inclusive deployment, by allowing anyone to sell renewable energy into the grid and get a long term, guaranteed return for it. This book, from authors who have spent years working on feed-in tariff design and advocacy, provides a broad and detailed resource on feed-in tariffs and other renewable energy support schemes. It shares many lessons on good and bad design and implementation, as well as discussing the challenges faced by policy, and renewable energy in general. Powering the Green Economy: - Situates renewable energy and feed-in tariffs within the context of the global moves towards a green economy - Provides an introduction to feed-in tariffs and brings developments in key countries around the world up to date - Investigates effective design for developed and emerging economies - Explores technical, social and political issues - Analyses other support schemes - Describes the barriers to renewable energy - Presents a blueprint for campaigning successfully for feed-in tariffs Written in a clear, practical style, this is a must-read for policymakers, businesses, investors, campaigners, academics, community groups and anyone concerned with creating successful and sustainable energy policy.

The concept of green growth, coupled with one of green economy and low carbon development, is a global concern especially in the face of the multiple crises that the world has faced in recent years - climate, oil, food, and financial crises. In East Asia, this concept is regarded as the key in transforming cheap-labour dependent, export-oriented industries towards a more sustainable development. Green Growth and Low Carbon Development in East Asia examines the beginnings of low carbon, green growth in practice in East Asia and how effectively it has directed East Asian nations, especially Korea, China and Japan, to put environment and climate challenges as the core target zone for investment and growth. Special focus is paid to energy and international trade - areas in which these nations compete with pioneered nations of Europe and the United States to develop renewable energy industries and enhance their international competitiveness. On the basis of the lessons learned in East Asia, together with a comparison of Russia, this book discusses the applicability and limitations of this developmental approach taken by the developing nations and resource-rich emerging economies, including the conditions and contexts in which nations are able to transition into sustainable development through the use of low carbon, green growth strategies.

State of the art in sustainability thinking, inspired by interdisciplinary ideas of ecological economics. It will be helpful for MSc and PhD students in Economics, Management, Environmental Change, Ecological Economics, Development Economics, Sustainability and practitioners in business, international and nongovernmental organizations. Rich, diverse and thought provoking collection of top level contributions, it will help to facilitate the transition towards sustainability and educational reform. A fabulous composition of papers by the authors who really count! Ernst von Weizsäcker, The Club of Rome The authors present a refreshing perspective on the possibilities of human progress in harmony with nature, without the need for economic growth to secure long term human welfare and wise use of nature's services. Extremely relevant. Peter May, Past President, International Society for Ecological Economics and Professor, UFRRJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The book goes well beyond the Green Economy, offering arguments and blueprints for a complete makeover of the current economic system. With multi- and interdisciplinary contributions ranging from moderately to fundamentally critical of current economics, it raises fundamental questions of value and power, draws on a wide range of theories, opens the eyes for the historical processes that brought about the current crises and demonstrates the value of ecological, but also classical economic thinking to their solution. If better politics require better theories, this is a must read for academics and decision makers in the time of climate crisis. “It's a fight against time." That is how the book begins, presenting a historical background of how the topic of sustainable production and consumption was included in the global agenda and reached Brazil. It is clear in the work who and what the potential actors and instruments that interact for that purpose are. In a fun way, thematic infographics show the impact from consumption and production, inspired by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In Chapters 2 and 3, readers will find inspiring examples of institutional procurement collected through exclusive interviews, news articles, corporate reports and scientific articles describing successful experiences in the public and private sectors, highlighting which institutions broke the resistance and became protagonists in the use of transformation potential through sustainable consumption and production. In Chapter 4, under a guidance perspective, two tools are recommended for continuously improving management of public and business procurement - the former was developed by ICLEI, for the Procura+ campaign, and the latter by the UN Global Compact. Also, propositions are presented in order to incorporate sustainability attributes in the procurement and supply management systems. Based on our experiences with consultancies and projects in partnership with governments, business platforms and academic researches, a survey was conducted with about 50 institutions, among public bodies and businesses, organizing lessons learnt and calling attention for facilitators and barriers of institutional consumption aimed at sustainability. Among the institutions we surveyed, we picked up the examples described in this work. Finally, in Chapter 5, under an integrated perspective of sectors and actors, including individual consumers, we made a critical analysis of the advancements and challenges faced in the past years, and point to guidelines for the future of the so-wanted 'inclusive green economy', considering institutional procurement as an essential tool to (re)build a global scenario that is more favorable to sustainable development.

In considering how we can meet environmental targets, crucial to delivering Net Zero and fulfilling our commitments to the Paris Agreement, and in the context of the fact that we are holding the COP26 Climate Conference later this year, we must now focus on action and on increasing the pace of our response. Faced with impending catastrophe, action is urgently required. It is imperative that radical reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases is central to whatever processes are carried out in the future. Every facet of our existence has an impact on the environment. Greenhouse gases, regardless of their origin, impact on the planet as a whole. It is vital that we stimulate both discussion and action and this book is both a call to arms and a celebration of what is already being achieved, written by a wide cross section of experts in this field. The book is divided into two parts. The first, 'What are the Fundamentals of a Greener Economy?', is intended to consider how change leading to a green economy may be facilitated. Part Two of this book, 'Principles in Action' presents a number of chapters written by those who have engaged in achieving green initiatives in their organisations. Edited by Dr Steven McCabe and Beverley Nielsen of BCU IDEAS, the book has a Foreword by The Baroness Brown of Cambridge, Professor Dame Julia King, DBE FREng FRS, formerly Deputy Chair, Climate Change Committee (CCC), Chair CCC Adaptation Committee; Chair of the Carbon Trust and Non-Executive Director of renewable energy company Ørsted and of fuel cell and electrolyser company Ceres Power. There are contributions from: Vicky Pryce, Economist and Visiting Professor, BCU; Tony Juniper, Chair, Nature Conservation Agency and Fellow, the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership; Sir Jonathan Porritt, Environmental Campaigner; Tom Field, Chief Executive Officer, UVTech-Hygienics; Lisa Trickett and Bryan Nott; Matthew Rhodes, Chair of West Midlands Energy Capital; Margot James, Executive Chair, WMG, Hopi Sen, Research Fellow, WMG, Dr Vannessa Goodship Associate Professor, Materials and Manufacturing Group, WMG, University of Warwick; Tor Farquhar, Ex-HR Director, Tata Steel, Europe; David Seall, Independent Director, Advisor and Chartered Engineer; Richard Haynes, Franco Cheung, Paul Nicol; Craig Sams, co-founder of Green & Black's, advocate of sustainable farming and leading voice for Carbon Gold; with an Afterword by Jack Dromey MP, Vice Chair APPG for the Environment, House of Commons

Green growth has proven to be politically popular, but economically elusive. Can Green Sustain Growth? asks how we can move from theoretical support to implementation, and argues that this leap will require radical experimentation. But systemic change is costly, and a sweeping shift cannot be accomplished without political support, not to mention large-scale cooperation between business and government. Insightful and timely, this book brings together eight original, international case studies to consider what we can learn from the implementation of green growth strategies to date. This analysis reveals that coalitions for green experimentation emerge and survive when they link climate solutions to specific problems with near-term benefits that appeal to both environmental and industrial interests. Based on these findings, the volume delivers concrete policy recommendations for the next steps in the necessary shift toward sustainable prosperity.
