Excerpt from Practical Business Arithmetic This work has been prepared with the belief that it will be of genuine service to all interested in business education. It is particularly planned for students pursuing a commercial course in business schools, high schools, and normal schools. The constant aim of the authors has been to develop the subject in such a way as to make it possible for the student to realize both the utilitarian and the cultural value of arithmetic. The topics have been selected with great care, and a logical unfolding of the whole subject has been kept in view. An attempt has been made to give problems which appeal to the needs and interests of the business student, and so to grade and group these problems as to make the mind-furnishing and mind-developing qualities of the subject go hand in hand Inherited puzzles and manufactured conditions which give a false notion of business have been studiously avoided. The subject as a whole has been modernized, and the exercises made simple, natural, and straightforward. The most important part of the arithmetic, considered from a business standpoint, is that part devoted to the four fundamental processes and fractions. Particular attention has therefore been devoted to the chapters in this part of the book. The need for speed and accuracy is emphasized in many different ways. There are many speed exercises, and the student is taught to check his work at every step. To make the work more real, many self-checking problems, taken from actual business transactions, are given. Many classes in high schools study business arithmetic before they have taken up the subject of bookkeeping. This book is made up of twenty chapters selected from the "Practical Business Arithmetic" (Revised) and retains the features of that volume that have been so highly commended by teachers, namely: the presentation of each subject in a logical order; the selection of problems that appeal to the needs and the interest of the student and of the community as well; the omission of complex and useless problems and the inclusion of such material as will meet the needs of persons who have time for only a brief study of business arithmetic; a plan of grading and grouping problems which aids the student in acquiring facility and in advancing his educational equipment; the inclusion of an amount of work that will contribute to real efficiency; the development of subjects inductively and the omission of set rules; the unusual amount of work in the different chapters. The text includes the computation of loss and gain on the selling price, tests on a time limit, additional work on graphs, statistical matter based on the latest census, and an appendix on the varied uses of the adding machine. As this work is based on the "Practical Business Arithmetic," of which the late John H. Moore was the senior author, it seems proper to retain his name in the first place on the title-page of this volume, the actual preparation of which has necessarily been entirely in the hands of the junior author of the Moore and Miner textbooks.
