Helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) may become a primary source of head-up information in future tactical aircraft. In evaluations, HMDs have produced improved situation awareness and mission performance. To realize this improved performance, HMD equipped pilots spend significantly more time looking off-axis, away from traditional displays. Accordingly, it is important that HMD information be designed so targeting and ownship status symbology is effective and safe. The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory is working to develop an optimized HMD symbology set. Toward this end, symbol designs must accommodate the conditions of intended use, technology limitations, and integration with other displays. This paper discusses efforts to design target tracking/location and ownship status symbologies for the day/night all weather fixed-wing tactical aircraft application. Design principles derived from both laboratory and flight test are presented. These principles relate to symbology frame of reference, orientation, compression, and line of sight mechanization. Evaluation methodologies are also discussed.

The HMD was developed to allow the pilot to retain aircraft and weapon information while looking off boresight. This document reviews current state of the art in HMDs and presents a design guide for the HMD engineer in identifying several critical HMD issues: symbol stabilization, inadequate definitions, undefined symbol drive laws, helmet considerations, and field of view (FOV) vs. resolution tradeoff requirements. In particular, display latency is a key issue for HMDs. In addition to requiring further experimental studies, it impacts the definition and control law issues. Symbol stabilization is also critical. In the case of the Apache helicopter, the lack of compensation for pilot head motion creates excessive workload during hovering and nap of the earth (NOE) flight. This translates into excessive training requirements. There is no agreed upon set of definitions or descriptions for how HMD symbols are driven to compensate for pilot head motion. A set of definitions is proposed to address this. There are several specific areas where simulation and flight experiments are needed: development of hover and NOE symbologies which compensate for pilot head movement; display latency and sampling, and the tradeoff between FOV, sensor resolution and symbology.

The primary purpose of the helmet-mounted display (HMD) for the fixed-wing tactical application is to provide target acquisition information to the pilot. The HMD and the information associated with it should first be designed to get the pilot's eyes on a target and to help lead a weapon sensor to a point of interest. In parallel arises both the capability and the need to provide other types of information via the HMD. For instance, ownship status information (including airspeed, altitude, heading, and attitude) can be presented to the pilot regardless of head location or movement. Off-boresight ownship status information may be useful during high off-boresight targeting tasks. Ownship status information includes at least airspeed, altitude, heading, and attitude. It is anticipated that this information will be useful during low-light and degraded visual conditions at viewing angles outside of the cockpit and HUD FOV. The challenge to the designer is to develop symbology that supports all the display information tactical objectives without adversely affecting the primary utility of the HMD. This means the symbology has to be highly usable compared to any associated cost and clutter incurred by its presence. It is not acceptable for HMD ownship status information to cause spatial disorientation or any other significant distraction from the primary objective of the information source. The present paper describes an ownship status symbology set being developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to enhance information affordance of future operational HMDs. The requirements of a successful HMD ownship status symbology set are understood to be an information source that adds to the operational utility of the HMD by increasing lethality and survivability for day, night, and all weather application.

Since the l970s, the trend in Army aviation has been to rely on helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) to provide the aircrew with pilotage imagery, flight information, and fire control imagery and symbology. This paper is intended to serve as both a checklist and a guide for designers of future integrated helmet and display systems for rotary-wing aircraft. In this paper: 1) salient performance parameters of such systems are identified; 2) recommendations for values of these parameters are suggested, based on past research and the opinions of subject matter experts; 3) an analysis of potential health and safety hazards is provided; 4) a human factors engineering assessment (HFEA) is provided; and 5)lessons learned from previously fielded U.S. Army HMD systems are summarized. However, this paper is not a cookbook for building an integrated helmet and display system.
