There is no more challenging a crime scene than that found in the custodial setting. Unlike on the streets where a first responder, or pair of responders, can take command of an incident quickly to preserve the integrity of the scene and the evidence it contains, the crime scene investigator in a jail or prison is not so fortunate. The jail or prison crime scene investigator will naturally be faced with a crime scene that is already contaminated, either by the routine and constant trudging of a confined inmate population or by the efforts of staff to restore order. Thus, the discovery of DNA from any one incarcerated individual is not as compelling to the event as it would be in the general public. Furthermore, custodial officials rely on the philosophy of “overwhelm and suppress” to control inmate disturbances. Therefore, the investigator will have to deal with an abundance of staff stuffed into a compact area of forensic importance. In the custodial setting, the focus of correctional staff is the prompt restoration of order with little concern for the evidence that the crime scene may contain. Crime Scene Processing in the Correctional Setting is a practical guide for sheriffs, wardens, superintendents, correctional investigative personnel, correctional officers, and deputies that is written in a manner that is easy to understand and by someone who faced the challenges of processing crime scenes in the correctional setting.

While many studying criminology learn to examine offenders, offending, and its consequences, few actually journey into the physical world of prisons to meet offenders face-to-face. Created specifically for criminology students and equally useful for current researchers and practitioners, this book serves as a step-by-step toolkit on how to humanely conduct research with populations in the correctional system. The authors’ combined 60+ years of experience allows them to provide field-tested practical advice for researching youth and adults on probation, on parole, or incarceration. The book guides readers through practical concerns, such as gaining access and building rapport with offenders and those who monitor them; the types of correctional data that can be collected; informed consent process and research ethics; and the logistics of doing research. Through personal stories, “what if” scenarios, and case studies, as well as examples of real-world tools like checklists and sample forms, the authors share methods of how to overcome the obstacles that criminologists must face as they learn to work with those behind bars.

Informants Cooperating Witnesses And Undercover Investigations written by Dennis G. Fitzgerald and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-05 with Computers categories.

The use of informants has been described as the "black hole of law enforcement." Failures in the training of police officers and federal agents in the recruitment and operation of informants has undermined costly long-term investigations, destroyed the careers of prosecutors and law enforcement officers, and caused death and serious injuries to innocent citizens and police. In many cases, the events leading to disaster could have been avoided had the law enforcement agency followed the time-tested procedures examined in this book. Informants, Cooperating Witnesses, and Undercover Investigations: A Practical Guide to Law, Policy, and Procedure, Second Edition covers every aspect of the informant and cooperating witness dynamic—a technique often shrouded in secrecy and widely misunderstood. Quoted routinely in countless newspaper and magazine articles, the first edition of this book was the go-to guide for practical, effective guidance on this controversial yet powerful investigative tool. Extensively updated, topics in this second edition include: Sweeping changes in the FBI and ICE informant and undercover programs New informant recruiting techniques Reverse sting operations Entrapment issues Examination of recent high-profile cases where the misuse of informants resulted in lawsuits and legislation The changing nature of compensation and cooperation agreements Forfeiture, informants, and rewards The management of controlled undercover purchases of evidence Challenges posed by fabricated information, phantom informants and police corruption Witness security measures New whistleblower reward programs Authoritative, scholarly, and based on boots-on-the-ground experience, this book is written by an author who has been a police supervisor, an informant recruiter and handler, an undercover agent, and an attorney. Supported by statutes, case law, and previously unpublished excerpts from law enforcement agency manuals, it is essential reading for every police officer, police manager, prosecutor, police academy trainer, criminal justice professor, and defense attorney. This book is part of the Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations series.
