Practical Engineering Geology provides an introduction to the way projects are managed, designed and constructed, and how the engineering geologist can contribute to cost- effective and safe project achievement. The need for a holistic view of geological materials, from soil to rock, and of geological history is emphasised. Chapters address key aspects of • Geology for engineering and ground modelling • Site investigation and testing of geological materials • Geotechnical parameters • Design of slopes, tunnels, foundations, and other engineering structures • Identifying hazards • Avoiding unexpected ground conditions This second edition includes a new chapter on environmental issues covering hydrogeology, considerations of climate change, earthquakes, and more. All chapters have been updated, with extensively revised figures throughout and several new case studies of unexpected ground conditions. The book will support practising engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers, as well as MSc level students of engineering geology and other geotechnical subjects.

Excerpt from Geology for Engineers In these days of specialising in "watertight compartments," the bearing of geology in relation to almost every branch of engineering is very frequently neglected or ignored. A knowledge of geology is, however, of the first importance to the practical engineer, but it is difficult for him to study the application of this science to his requirements without having recourse to a large number of different textbooks and other works. References to geology which are often of the greatest practical importance are often almost hidden away or treated in an obscure fashion, whereas the engineer requires the needful information to be put before him in a clear and concise manner. To meet this want I have endeavoured to compile the requisite information in one volume, in the hope that it may serve as a handy book of reference. I am greatly indebted to the various authors and publishers of the books mentioned in the accompanying list for so kindly allowing me to take such extracts as I required, and desire to record my grateful thanks to Professors Lapworth, Cole, and Bauerman, and Mr Hayden of the Geological Survey of India, for their kind help and encouragement. These extracts are referred to by a number at the end of each quotation corresponding with the number in the accompanying list. The exploration and extraction of the earth's resources are key issues in global industrial development. In the 21st century, emphasis has increasingly being placed on geo-engineering safety, engineering accountability and sustainability. With focus on rock engineering projects, Structural Geology and Rock Engineering uses case studies and an integrated engineering approach to provide an understanding of projects constructed on or in rock masses. Based on Professors Cosgrove and Hudson's university teaching at Imperial College London, as well as relevant short course presentations, it explains the processes required for engineering modelling, design and construction. The first half of the book provides step-by-step presentations of the principles of structural geology and rock mechanics with special emphasis on the integration between the two subjects. The second half of the book turns principles into practice. A wealth of practical engineering examples are presented, including evaluations of bridge foundations, quarries, dams, opencast coal mining, underground rock engineering, historical monuments and stone buildings. This up-to-date, well-illustrated guide is ideal for teachers, researchers and engineers interested in the study and practice of rock-based projects in engineering.

Geology – Basics for Engineers (second edition) presents the physical and chemical characteristics of the Earth, the nature and the properties of rocks and unconsolidated deposits/sediments, the action of water, how the Earth is transformed by various phenomena at different scales of time and space. The book shows the engineer how to take geological conditions into account in their projects, and how to exploit a wide range of natural resources in an intelligent way, reduce geological hazards, and manage subsurface pollution. This second edition has been fully revised and updated. Through a problem-based learning approach, this instructional text imparts knowledge and practical experience to engineering students (undergraduate and graduate level), as well as to experts in the fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering, earth sciences, architecture, land and urban planning. Free digital supplements to the book, found on the book page, contain solutions to the problems and animations that show additional facets of the living Earth. The original French edition of the book (2007) won the prestigious Roberval Prize, an international contest organized by the University of Technology of Compiegne in collaboration with the General Council of Oise, France. Geology, Basics for Engineers was selected out of a total of 110 candidates. The jury praised the book as a "very well conceived teaching textbook" and underscored its highly didactic nature, as well as the excellent quality of its illustrations. Features: Offers an exhaustive outline of the methods and techniques used in geology, with a study of the nature and properties of the principal soils and rocks Helps students understand how geological conditions should be taken into account by the engineer by taking a problem-solving approach Contains extensive figures and examples, solutions to probems, and illustrative animations Presents a highly didactic and synthetic work intended for engineering students as well as experts in civil engineering, environmental engineering, the earth sciences, and architecture
