From the time Jesus first taught his disciples how to pray to the present day, the Church has pointed out a variety of ways in which a person can fruitfully communicate with God and grow in the spiritual life. Lectio divina, meditation, contemplation, the recitation of the rosary and prayer in action are all covered in these forty brief reflections which encourage us to pray as you can, not as you can't. Taking a quote from the Gospels or a thought from a saintly expert in the art of prayer as a springboard for the suggestions made in these pages the author draws on his own experience as a spiritual director and retreat master to show how the advice given can be put into practice in one's daily life. He concludes with a series of brief prayers with which one can begin and end each day in the presence of God in whose Spirit we are called to pray.

“There is only one way to perfection and that is to pray; if anyone points in another direction then they are deceiving you.” ~ Saint Teresa of Ávila If we want to become the people God made us to be, we need to set aside time every day for prayer. It sounds simple enough, but we often allow distractions, temptations, and our busy lives to keep us from daily prayer. And what is prayer? Prayer is our “no” to self and “yes” to God. Prayer is the place where we freely choose to receive God’s love. As we daily try to raise our minds and hearts to God, giving our time to be present with him, God gives us the love that alone can transform us into his image and likeness. In How to Pray: A Practical Guide to the Spiritual Life, spiritual theologian David Torkington offers everyday guidance for entering more deeply into prayer, whether you are a beginner or looking to go deeper in your prayer life. The forty short, easy-to-read chapters in this guide can be read as a devotional, for meditation, or alongside Sacred Scripture. Through prayer, our soul becomes like a lightning rod allowing the Holy Spirit to enter our hearts. The more regularly and the more persistently we pray, the more we are changed.

Five Pillars Of The Spiritual Life written by Robert Spitzer and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-03 with Religion categories.

Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, espoused the ideal of becoming "contemplatives in action." He was convinced that contemplation (the deep awareness and appropriation of the unconditional love of God) should affect our actions, and that our actions need to be brought back to contemplation. These five dimensions of the spiritual life: (1) the Holy Eucharist, (2) spontaneous prayer, (3) the Beatitudes, (4) partnership with the Holy Spirit, and (5) the contemplative life itself, generally do not develop simultaneously or even in parallel ways. Some develop very quickly, but do not achieve significant depth; while others develop quite slowly, but seem to be almost unending in the depth of wisdom, trust, hope, virtue, and love they engender. The best way of explaining this is to look at each of the pillars individually. Before doing this, however, it is indispensable for each of us to acknowledge (at least intellectually) the fundamental basis for Christian contemplation, namely, the unconditional Love of God. Jesus taught us to address God as Abba. If God really is Abba; if His love is like the father of the prodigal son; if Jesus' passion and Eucharist are confirmations of that unconditional Love; if God really did so love the world that He sent His only begotten Son into the world not to condemn us, but to save us and bring us to eternal life (Jn 3:16-19); if nothing really can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Rm 8:31-39); and if God really has prepared us "to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love which surpasses all understanding, so that we may attain to the fullness of God Himself" (Eph 3:18-20), then God's love is unconditional, and it is, therefore, the foundation for unconditional trust and unconditional hope. There can be nothing more important than contemplating, affirming, appropriating, and living in this Unconditional Love. This is the purpose of contemplation; indeed, the purpose of the spiritual life itself.

On the path to spiritual understanding, no practice is more important in terms of spiritual transformation than the practices of meditation and prayer. And yet, as in many areas of spiritual discipline, it is as important to know why we pray and meditate as it is to know how. This book answers some common but important questions relating to both the how and the why of these two disciplines. Part I lays the foundation necessary for a positive experience of meditation and prayer. Parts II and III explain the theory and practice of meditation and prayer and give steps for the practice. Part IV offers suggestions on the practical applications of prayer in the areas of healing, prosperity and relationships. Sprinkled liberally with helpful affirmations, inspiring quotation and the author's own wise insights, this book is more than a "how-to." It is a "why-to" that will be a valued companion to anyone seeking a deeper spiritual life through the practices of meditation and prayer.
