We have to keep this in mind as we think about holiness and do God’s business. We are peculiar people who are faithful to this supernatural God who is totally beyond our scope and ability to reason. At one time there was a great deal of interest in the topic of holiness—but not so much anymore. Theological wrangling and impossible legalism has left many in the church frustrated and confused, with part of that confusion arising from idealism in the pulpit that rang hollow in the lives and experiences of ordinary believers. But what if there was significant help from God in the enterprise of living a morally triumphant life, where habitual sinning was not inevitable, and where the development of godly character was possible and found through a maturing relationship with God and growth in the Christian life? The apostle Paul certainly thought so. In Help for Holiness, author and senior pastor Paul F. The language of holiness seems outdated. It is a word that comes to us thwarted by a negative history, associated with undesirable restrictions and oppressive legalisms. First, holiness properly understood speaks to being and acting in a way that reflects both a regenerated life in Christ and the ongoing renewal in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Secondly, holiness as a lifestyle must include at least three principles: rest, being, and doing. These three standards undergird a life of conviction of faith and practice, worship for God, and service to others. A holy life follows Christ and is Spirit-filled. It is unbent by society, which is numb to what God wants.
