Excerpt from A Practical Spanish Grammar A minimum of rules and a maximum of exercises. Such is the motto which has guided us in the preparation of this grammar. The title which we have selected may seem somewhat ambi tious, but it is justified, we think, not only by the systematic method of treatment and the large number of exercises of a prac tical nature, but also by the simplicity and variety of the reading selections and the use of plain, every-day Spanish, interspersed with numerous commercial expressions. In fact, no attempt has been made at elegance of style, and the constructions are as simple as the grammatical points to be illustrated will permit. Subject-matter. This is not presented piecemeal and helter skelter, but logically and systematically, every grammatical point being treated exhaustively before another is taken up. Rules.. These are stated in plain and simple language. We believe that this grammar contains all the fundamental rules that a student needs in order to be able to understand, write, and speak Spanish correctly. It is suggested that during the first term of the course teachers should insist only on the study of the main rules and the preparation of corresponding exercises, leaving the less important rules (such as augmentatives, diminutives, etc.) and corresponding exercises for the review during the second term. Students should be asked to read these less important rules, however, so that they may not be confused if they meet illustrations of them later in the book. Excerpt from Practical Spanish Grammar: With Exercises and Themes The following pages, written at first for my classes in Cornell University, are now handed over to the public in the hope that they may be of some help in introducing others, as well as college students, to the Spanish language and literature. My aim has been to write a practical grammar and, so far as college students are concerned, one that may be tolerably well mastered (leaving time for reading about 150 ordinary duodecimo pages of Spanish in one college year), provided two recitations per week are devoted to it. My own custom has been to have the students learn the advance lesson only so thoroughly as to be able to write out the theme; to have them put the theme on the board; to correct it myself, having the students correct their themes as I indicate mistakes and state reasons for changes, and on the review (next time we meet) to give (without book or theme) the Spanish for the English (as well as the English for the Spanish) on my reading the sentences aloud. A part at least of the Spanish reading lessons was also translated on review (as above) from hearing me read the Spanish. This method seemed to work admirably at Cornell; but is given here simply for such teachers as may not have a definite and possibly better method of their own.
