Not another textbook for neuropathology! Yes, Our publishers helped us with this last problem by we hear you and feel your pain. In fact, that was our insisting on black and white photographs. We ini initial response when we were approached to write tially protested, noting that many recent textbook the book you are now holding. In surveying the reviews seemed to be primarily guided by whether expanse of currently available neuropathology illustrations were in color (good) or black and white textbooks, however, we came to feel that there was (bad). However, upon further reflection we accepted a place for a book that could combine our career this mandate as a blessing in disguise, allowing the experiences of trying to discern what is known (and reader to focus on differences in morphology, rather knowable) with the perennially proposed question, than tincture, as a guide to correct diagnosis. In fact, "What do we need to know?" Together we tried to one of us (M. e. ) has always been a fan of black and produce a book that would be practical, understand white photography, both in histologic atlases as well able, and to the point (minimizing reading time as in the immortal photographs of artists ranging from during intraoperative consultation). Diagnostic Surgical Neuropathology by Location, is a practical guide for all pathologists in their initial, real-time encounters with brain of spinal cord biopsies for the immediate rendering of an intraoperative diagnosis based on the squash preparations of frozen section. The book is organized with a heavy emphasis on neuroanatomic to neuropathologic relationships best defined as a given lesion's location with regard to its contiguous macroscopic and microscopic environments. The demonstration of the lesion's macroscopic environment would include corresponding radiographic images, diagrams, and photographs of applicable autopsy teaching specimens for comparison; the microscopic environment would be illustrated by photomicrographs expressly composed in ways to show lesions in relation to contiguous unaffected, non-diseased tissue. The chapters progress from the cranial-to-caudal segments of the neuraxis from brain to spinal cord, respectively. The topics to be included in this book consist of all lesions likely to be encountered in the course of intraoperative neuropathologic consultation; this would encompass both primary and metastatic (secondary) forms of CNS neoplasia, non-neoplastic CNS lesions (for example, demyelinative processes), and CNS infections. Both of the two principal techniques - smear preparations and frozen sections - are described in great detail. Introductory chapters address general approaches to specimen acquisition and preparation; specific clinical and radiological features; differential diagnosis by site; tumor and non-tumor entities with specific pathological features; and normal cells and tissues potentially mistaken for abnormalities. The bulk of the text describes specific clinicopathological entities, in over 80 chapters. Most of the latter present bulleted summaries of clinical and radiological features, similarly formatted sections on cytological (smear preparations) and histological (frozen sections) findings, and detailed differential diagnoses. The understanding of the diseases affecting the nervous system tissue particularly the brain, viz. brain tumors, degenerative diseases, neuromuscular diseases, brain trauma, multiple sclerosis and stroke can be approached through neuropathological studies. Neuropathology is aided in this direction with small surgical biopsies and in some cases, whole-body autopsies. Another aspect of neuropathology is the analysis and examination of muscle and peripheral nerve biopsies.
