This book proposes a new paradigm of public scholarship for our time, one that shifts from the notion of the public intellectual to the model of the engaged scholar. The editors’ premise is that the work of public scholarship should be driven by a commitment to supporting a diverse democracy and promoting equity and social justice. The contributors to this volume present models that eschew the top-down framing of policy to advocate for practice that drives bottom-up change by arming the widest range of stakeholders -- especially members of marginalized communities -- with relevant research. They demonstrate how public scholarship in higher education can increase its impact on practice and policy and compellingly argue that public scholarship should be recognized as normative practice for all scholars and indeed integrated into the curriculum of graduate courses. The chapters describe multiple types of public scholarship and different strategies that move beyond informing policymakers, faculty, and administrators to engage publics such as students and parents, media, the general public, and particularly groups that may have had little or no access to research. Examples include partnering with a community agency to design a research project and disseminate results; writing for practitioner or policy venues and magazines outside the traditional academic journals; serving on boards for national groups that impact decisions related to your area of research; and the use of social media.Whether scholar, director of graduate education, or graduate student of higher education, this book opens up a new vision of how research can inform practice that promotes the public good.

Through its impact on students in their lives in and beyond college, and recognizing the porous boundary between the classroom and the “real world,” SoTL can offer insights into broader societal issues, offer evidence of activities that facilitate everyday learning, promote intrinsic motivation, better support people from underrepresented communities, or uncover the ripple effects of changing educational environments. It has the potential to deliver messages of broad public interest. This book extends the field-building work of Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered and Hutchings, Huber, and Ciccone’s The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Reconsidered by taking a new look at SoTL’s ubiquitous call to “go public.” Going Public Reconsidered explores the potential impacts of knowledge generated by SoTL, considers its varied public audiences, and offers guidance for the appropriate media and modes of communication to reach them, including the use of social media. It urges the SoTL community to step up and contribute its expertise to conversations about the crises that face our communities, nations, and the world, and disseminate the relevance of its research for the world outside of the classroom.Recognizing that many practitioners find it difficult to conceptualize the public in public SoTL beyond the higher education audiences they routinely address, this book focusses on conceptualizing, planning, and shaping the message, and clarifying appropriate audiences. It offers guidance on the “who” and the “how” of public SoTL. Going Public Reconsidered addresses such questions as: ● What is happening in the world that would benefit from a SoTL-informed perspective?● What information, insight, or knowledge does SoTL generate?● Who beyond higher education might care about this information, insight, or knowledge, and why?● How can we adapt to the venues and platforms where they currently get their information and knowledge? The fifteen editors and contributors explore the potential and the implications of extending SoTL beyond its current horizons by reflecting on the ultimate responsibility of those who profess SoTL; examining SoTL’s audiences and the notion of “the public”; considering what topics and Grand Challenges public SoTL might address; offering case studies of outreach in the US and abroad; and providing guidance on the use of social media for public SoTL – from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube to blogs – as well as on developing relationships with mainstream media. The book’s message is that public SoTL isn’t a radical departure from SoTL-as-we-know-it, but a natural expansion of its methods and goals, offering the potential of broadening its impact domestically and internationally. It offers inspiration and challenges to practitioners across the globe.

Public Scholarship in Literary Studies demonstrates that literary criticism has the potential not only to explain, but to actively change our terms of engagement with current realities. Rachel Arteaga and Rosemary Johnsen bring together accomplished public scholars who make significant contributions to literary scholarship, teaching, and the public good. The volume begins with essays by scholars who write regularly for large public audiences in primarily digital venues, then moves to accounts of research-based teaching and engagement in public contexts, and finally turns to important new models for cross-institutional partnerships and campus-community engagement. Grounded in scholarship and written in an accessible style, Public Scholarship in Literary Studies will appeal to scholars in and outside the academy, students, and those interested in the public humanities. "There are books of literary criticism that attempt to reach crossover audiences but none that take this particular public-humanities-focused-on-literary criticism perspective."--Kathryn Temple, Georgetown University Contributions by Rachel Arteaga, Christine Chaney, Jim Cocola, Daniel Coleman, Christopher Douglas, Gary Handwerk, Cynthia L. Haven, Rosemary Erickson Johnsen, Anu Taranath, Carmaletta M. Williams, and Lorraine York.

Criminologists In The Media written by Mark A. Wood and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-05 with Social Science categories.

Criminologists in the Media presents the results of a cross-national study examining the structures that shape criminologists’ contributions to news and social media discourse. Drawing on interviews with criminologists and a survey of 1,211 criminologists working in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and South Africa, this book represents the first cross-national study exploring how, why, and to what extent criminologists working in these countries engage in newsmaking and digital public criminology. Through examining the predictors of criminologists appearing in news media, the research presented in this book demonstrates that newsmaking practices within criminology are not reflective of equal access, interest, or opportunity. Rather, newsmaking operates within ‘fields of power’ shaped by the political economy of higher education, and researchers’ academic rank, gender, and areas of research expertise. Together, these factors generate several ‘situational logics’ that predispose criminologists to pursue particular courses of action in promoting their personal projects. Key among these logics, Wood, Richards, and Iliadis argue, are a ‘social logic’ informing criminologists’ moral-political views on newsmaking and an ‘industrial logic’ responsive to the demands of academic capitalism and the rise of the ‘entrepreneurial’ university. With its focus on the practicalities, challenges, and inequities of newsmaking in the post-broadcast era, Criminologists in the Media will appeal to researchers interested in the public role(s) of criminology, as well as researchers concerned with the challenges of communicating social scientific knowledge beyond the academy.

"The research landscape has changed dramatically over the past couple decades. As we have moved from a disciplinary to transdisciplinary terrain, as our means for communicating have increased with the Internet and social media, and as we've developed new ways of doing and representing research, the structures our research may take have also changed, as have what our professional lives may look like"--

Prometheus brought the gift of enlightenment to humanity and suffered for his benevolence. This collection takes on scholars’ Promethean view of themselves as selfless bringers of light and instead offers a new vision of public scholarship as service to society. Thomas J Billard and Silvio Waisbord curate essays from a wide range of specialties within the study of communication. Aimed at scholars and students alike, the contributors use approaches from critical meditations to case studies to how-to guides as they explore the possibilities of seeing shared knowledge not as a gift to be granted but as an imperative urging readers to address the problems of the world. Throughout the volume, the works show that a pivot to ideas of scholarship as public service is already underway in corners of communication studies across the country. Visionary and provocative, Public Scholarship in Communication Studies proposes a needed reconsideration of knowledge and a roadmap to its integration with community.
