This book provides a first thorough analysis of internet humour from a cognitive-pragmatic perspective, covering a wide range of discourses that are pervasive online and focusing especially on messaging interactions, social networking sites and memes. Its chapters describe the inferential strategies implemented to turn online coded discourses into meaningful interpretations, which in turn can be devised and manipulated for the sake of humour. Furthermore, and apart from the typical object of pragmatic research (humorous discourses), the book emphasises the importance of the interfaces’ design and of the qualities of the users engaged in humorous interactions (called contextual constraints), additionally highlighting the parallel significance of the various effects, shaped as feelings and emotions, that stem from humorous communication on the internet. Internet-mediated communication is pervasive nowadays, in an age in which many people shy away from physical settings and often rely, instead, on social media and messaging apps for their everyday communicative needs. Since pragmatics deals with communication in context and how more gets communicated than is said (or typed), applications of this linguistic perspective to internet communication, under the umbrella label of internet pragmatics, are not only welcome, but necessary. Emoji is everywhere—on messaging apps, social networking sites, and even in offline media like billboards, films, and printed ads. While there is a substantial existing bibliography on emojis, it often fails to address their functions and interpretations in purely pragmatic terms, specifically focusing on their impact on inferential strategies for both the emojis themselves and accompanying texts. Existing books on this topic tend to focus on the semiotic aspects or visual impact of emojis, rather than their crucial role in interpreting the messaging text or social media post to which they are attached, as well as the way they communicate their own meanings when used in isolation (so-called naked emojis). This book is original in analysing the pragmatic roles that emojis play in online communication, the additional information they convey, and the role of context in their successful interpretation. The book also argues that, despite the apparent differences between words and images, emojis perform similar functions and are inferred in similar ways to words, with the aid of context. Additionally, the book dedicates several chapters to demographic variables (age, gender, ethnic origin, personality, etc.), the role of “interface affordances” in emoji use, and thematic areas where emojis are frequently found: humour, advertising/marketing, politics, law, and health.

This book examines how identities are constructed in digital, multimodal discourse, and how these identities (gender, age, race, ethnicity, professional, etc.) are generally evaluated as they are claimed, attributed, verified, and non-verified intersubjectively in a polymedia space. Although the construction of online identity has been addressed in the literature, the online construction of identity in the Spanish speaking world has received less focused attention. This volume contains chapters by renowned specialists in pragmatics and digital communication, and is the most recent output of an ongoing externally funded project (UPO-1380703). The book includes a state-of-the-art introduction by the editors followed by three main sections: the first is devoted to examining digital identifies in conflict; the second addresses self-presentation on Twitter and Instagram, with a special focus on politics and gender; and finally, the third addresses identity construction in the genre of online reviews. All of the chapters address self and other identity construction in contexts of both convergence and controversy, in a variety of digital social platforms and practices related to gender, age, political stance, race, ethnicity, and lifestyle.
