This book, the result of cooperation between the Center for Dewey Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the Dewey Center at the University of Cologne, provides an excellent example of the international character of pragmatist studies against the backdrop of constructivist concerns. As a part of their exploration of the many points of contact between classical pragmatism and contemporary constructivism, its contributors turn their attention to theories of interaction and transaction, communication and culture, learning and education, community and democracy, theory and practice, and inquiry and methods.

Pragmatism And The Wide View Of Democracy written by Roberto Frega and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-22 with Philosophy categories.
The aim of this book is to provide a fresh, wider, and more compelling account of democracy than the one we usually find in conventional contemporary political theory. Telling the story of democracy as a broad societal project rather than as merely a political regime, Frega delivers an account more in tune with our everyday experience and ordinary intuitions, bringing back into political theory the notion that democracy denotes first and foremost a form of society, and only secondarily a specific political regime. The theoretical shift accomplished is major. Claiming that such a view of democracy is capable of replacing the mainstream categories of justice, freedom and non-domination in their hegemonic function of all-encompassing political concepts, Frega then argues for democracy as the broader normative framework within which to rethink the meaning and forms of associated living in all spheres of personal, social, economic, and political life. Drawing on diverse traditions of American pragmatism and critical theory, as well as tackling political issues which are at the core of contemporary theoretical debates, this book invites a rethinking of political theory to one more concerned with the political circumstances of social life, rather than remaining confined in the narrowly circumscribed space of a theory of government.

Pragmatism written by Michael Bacon and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-14 with Philosophy categories.
Pragmatism: An Introduction provides an account of the arguments of the central figures of the most important philosophical tradition in the American history of ideas, pragmatism. This wide-ranging and accessible study explores the work of the classical pragmatists Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and John Dewey, as well as more recent philosophers including Richard Rorty, Richard J. Bernstein, Cheryl Misak, and Robert B. Brandom. Michael Bacon examines how pragmatists argue for the importance of connecting philosophy to practice. In so doing, they set themselves in opposition to many of the presumptions that have dominated philosophy since Descartes. The book demonstrates how pragmatists reject the Cartesian spectator theory of knowledge, in which the mind is viewed as seeking accurately to represent items in the world, and replace it with an understanding of truth and knowledge in terms of the roles they play within our social practices. The book explores the diverse range of positions that have engendered marked and sometimes acrimonious disputes amongst pragmatists. Bacon identifies the themes underlying these differences, revealing a greater commonality than many commentators have recognized. The result is an illuminating narrative of a rich philosophical movement that will be of interest to students in philosophy, political theory, and the history of ideas.

Pragmatism And Modernities written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-01 with Education categories.
Pragmatism belongs—at least to a certain degree—to the Protestant-based reaction towards the economic, social, and political developments of the time in the US, and it is no coincidence that the pragmatists all came from religious families if not even theologian families. But these life conditions have changed over the course of the last century as much as the Protestant self-assurance has been questioned more and more. The question discussed in this book by international scholars is as to whether the possible modernity of pragmatism of around and after 1900 can still be labeled modern today, in the modernity (or post-modernity) around and after 2000. Has philosophy and philosophy of education found better alternatives? Have the alternatives of the time around 1900 proven to be better? Were the contemporary critics of pragmatism right? These questions are discussed in fourteen chapters clustered in three lager parts: The first part deals with pragmatism and modernity around 1900, the second part discusses contemporary alternatives to pragmatism and critics of pragmatism, and the third and last part of the book deals with the modernity of pragmatism today. Intended audience: • philosophers • philosophers of education • historians • historians of education • religious educators • historians of sociology • cultural historians • political scientists • postmodernists
