“A riveting tale of her family’s experience in Europe during World War II [and] a well-wrought political history of the region, told with great authority. . . . More than a memoir, this is a book of facts and action, a chronicle of a war in progress from a partisan faithful to the idea of Czechoslovakian democracy.” -- Los Angeles Times Drawn from her own memory, her parents’ written reflections, and interviews with contemporaries, the former US Secretary of State and New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Albright's tale that is by turns harrowing and inspiring Before she turned twelve, Madeleine Albright’s life was shaken by some of the most cataclysmic events of the 20th century: the Nazi invasion of her native Prague, the Battle of Britain, the attempted genocide of European Jewry, the allied victory in World War II, the rise of communism, and the onset of the Cold War. In Prague Winter, Albright reflects on her discovery of her family’s Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland’s tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descriptions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exile leaders and freedom fighters, resistance organizers and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are shaped by concepts familiar to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. Prague Winter is an exploration of the past with timeless dilemmas in mind, a journey with universal lessons that is simultaneously a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history. It serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past, as seen through the eyes of one of the international community’s most respected and fascinating figures in history. Albright and her family’s experiences provide an intensely human lens through which to view the most political and tumultuous years in modern history.

Map of the book: https: //www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zgLY3V_ctqlA.kayv7d4tDJck&hl=en Prague never lets you go... this dear little mother has sharp claws -Franz Kafka Prague is one of the world's great cities and one that I have a very special connection with. A long time ago (in the early 1990's), I went there to find my fortune and explore the "Left Bank of the '90's." It was a magical experience, even if I have not yet managed to complete my masterpiece. Every time I return, it feels like the last scenes of the film "Before Sunrise" where the last scenes of the film show the places that now seem empty without the characters to bring them to life. The photographs capture the city through the streets, the food, the nightlife, the people and the unique flavour of life that is Prague. Places that I habitually made my own during that time and new places that are fresh. This time in Winter. Paul Mc Namara - June 2014

Franz Kafka And His Prague Contexts written by Nekula, Marek and has been published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Franz Kafka is by far the Prague author most widely read and admired internationally. However, his reception in Czechoslovakia, launched by the Liblice conference in 1963, has been conflicted. While rescuing Kafka from years of censorship and neglect, Czech critics of the 1960s “overwrote” his German and Jewish literary and cultural contexts in order to focus on his Czech cultural connections. Seeking to rediscover Kafka’s multiple backgrounds, in Franz Kafka and His Prague Contexts Marek Nekula focuses on Kafka’s Jewish social and literary networks in Prague, his German and Czech bilingualism, and his knowledge of Yiddish and Hebrew. Kafka’s bilingualism is discussed in the context of contemporary essentialist views of a writer’s organic language and identity. Nekula also pays particular attention to Kafka’s education, examining his studies of Czech language and literature as well as its role in his intellectual life. The book concludes by asking how Kafka read his urban environment, looking at the readings of Prague encoded in his fictional and nonfictional texts. ‘Nekula’s work has had a major impact on our understanding of Kafka’s relation to the complex social, cultural and linguistic environment of early twentieth‑century Prague. While little of this work has been available in English until now, the present volume translates many of his most important studies, and includes revisions and expansions appearing now for the first time. Nekula challenges stubborn clichés and opens important new perspectives: readers interested in questions relating to Kafka and Prague will find this an essential and richly rewarding book.’ – Peter Zusi, University College London ‘Marek Nekula’s important book originally situates Franz Kafka within his Pragueand Czech contexts. It critically examines numerous distortions that accompanied the reception of Kafka, starting with the central issue of Kafka’s languages(Kafka’s Czech, Prague German), and the ideological discourse surrounding the author in communist Czechoslovakia. Astute and carefully argued, Franz Kafka and his Prague Contexts offers new perspectives on the writings of the Prague author. This book will benefit readers in German and Slavic Studies, in Comparative Literature, and History of Ideas.’

Adventures With Czech George written by Mike Brown and has been published by Author House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-18 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This is a personal memoir of my very special friendship with a very unusual man. My wife and I first met George Borcovec during the short-lived Prague Spring of 1968. This chance encounter was the start of a forty year adventure during which we went behind the Iron Curtain, introduced George to life in Britain, watched in fascination the long struggle for freedom of the Czech people, contacted George and his family again after their flight to Austria, taught English in Northern Bohemia, and visited the wonderful city of Prague more than a dozen times. This book tells that story. It covers a dramatic period of change in European history: from hard-line Communism to the challenges of freedom and democracy since 1989. It includes some earlier Czech history, and deals with some of the differences between Czech and British culture. There are family photographs and family letters. There are even some jokes, mainly at the expense of the Czech Communist authorities.

Enhancing Biological Control written by Charles Hammond Pickett and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Nature categories.

Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.
