Pembangunan berkelanjutan adalah pendekatan pembangunan yang didasarkan pada wawasan lingkungan, ethnocentric dan sekaligus pertumbuhan ekonomi, yang pada perkembangannya disadari bahwa untuk mencapai ekuilibrium dari tiga hal di atas maka harus memiliki landasan budaya dan kelembagaan yang kuat. Pemahaman tentang pembangunan berkelanjutan ini harus menjadi jiwa dari setiap upaya pembangunan, terutama pada fase perencanaan yang menjadi tema dari buku ini. Perencanaan pembangunan bisa dilihat mulai dari skala yang wilayah yang luas (makro), misalnya perencanaan wilayah nasional, demikian pula untuk wilayah kota (skala meso) yang berupa perencanaan dan perancangan kota, sampai dengan skala mikro yaitu lingkungan binaan dan bangunan. Untuk itu dalam buku ini diulas pendekatan perencanaan pembangunan yang berkelanjutan mulai dari: skala makro yaitu sustainable regional development (SRD); skala meso yaitu kota yang berkelanjutan yang diupayakan melalui kota pintar, kota kompak dan kota ekologis. Penting dipahami bahwa upaya tersebut di atas harus dapat dievaluasi melalui pengembangan sistem indikator pembangunan yang berkelanjutan. Untuk skala mikro dalam buku ini diuraikan tentang konsep kampung yang berkelanjutan /Kampung Orieted Development (KOD) yang merupakan lingkungan binaan yang menjadi warna khas perkotaan di Asia Tenggara dan menjadi habitat dari sebagian besar penduduk perkotaan di Indonesia. Disamping bahasan tentang kampung, untuk skala mikro dikaji pula bangunan hijau. Masing masing skala (makro – meso – mikro) disertai contoh contoh yang diambil dari berbagai jurnal serta tugas yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa magister di Fakultas Teknik Universitas Brawijaya.
