Le 5 décembre 1999, Charles s'éteint à son domicile de ce village de Turquant, situé au bord de la Loire, en Anjou, où il était né le 2 avril 1907. Son père, Alexis, mort au champ d'honneur de la " Grande Guerre ", ayant appris le métier de forgeron-maréchal à Fontevraud et s'étant perfectionné à la maréchalerie militaire de Saumur, le jeune homme crée un atelier d'artisan sur la propriété familiale. Bercé dès l'enfance par les idées d'une Gauche républicaine, parallèlement au militantisme syndical professionnel, Charles s'engage dès 1934 au Parti Communiste Français. A peine démobilisé en 1940, c'est tout naturellement qu'il entre en résistance. Il est arrêté le 16 juin 1941, incarcéré à la prison centrale de Fontevrault puis déporté à Buchenwald via Auschwitz où il sera tatoué d'un numéro matricule (le 185 622) comme le millier de compagnons d'infortune de ce train dit le " Convoi des Tatoués ". Il ne devait retrouver son village natal et les siens que le 11 mai 1945. C'est le 6 janvier 1941 que l'auteur de ce récit fait irruption dans l'univers de Charles, comme le benjamin de ses quatre enfants. Désormais, il sera le témoin du parcours du père devenant homme public ; président départemental de son syndicat professionnel, conseiller municipal durant 36 ans, dirigeant de la société de l'Union... abandonnant, la cinquantaine venue, sa forge pour la plomberie et l'électricité. Un parcours jonché de drames mais aussi chemin ponctué de joies ; de route commune quand le fils prend le Parti du père pour un bout de temps ; un voyage qui s'apaise, la retraite sonnée, entre parties de pêche, de boule de fort ou de cartes. Nous découvrirons tout le XXe siècle, à Turquant, village du saumurois, à travers le parcours d'un citoyen rêvant de " lendemains qui chantent " et profondément ancré dans la vie locale.
