"This is by far the most serious study undertaken by a Protestant missiologist on the Latin American base ecclesial communities. It is also one of the few studies that relates this extraordinary ecclesial phenomenon with its counterpart in Protestant history. The fact that Cook writes not only as a Protestant but as one identified with the evangelical tradition makes it all the more relevant. It should be required reading for everyone interested in the life and mission of the grassroots church in the Americas and in the renewal of local congregations everywhere."Orlando E. Costas, Andover Newton Theological School"The book is painstakingly researched, extraordinarily well written, and - in my judgment - sets a new benchmark for understanding one of the truly phenomenal things God is doing among grassroots Christians in Latin America."Alan Neely, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary"Guillermo Cook has performed an invaluable service. With his encyclopedic grasp of the history, ethos, and current activities of the comunidades de base - grassroots lay communities in the Latin American Catholic Church - he has provided a vivid reminder of the sort of parallel stirrings that brought renewal to many Protestant churches and spawned new spiritual movements during the last four hundred years. These Catholic ecclesial communities are being used of God to transform static, clergy-dominated, sacramentalist structures into living, spontaneous movements of loving service and evangelistic concern. All should join Dr. Cook in praying that they shall continue to be the 'Hope of the Church' and the 'Expectation of the Poor' throughout Latin America today, and tomorrow!"Arthur F. Glasser, Fuller Theological Seminary"The Expectation of the Poor is the most inclusive study on the subject that I know. Cook brings to this task his long years of experience and study as a missiologist who has spent decades working in Latin America. His bibliography is probably the most complete on the subject that has been published."Mortimer Arias, author of The Cry of My People

Ideas like the "preferential option for the poor"-arguing that people marginalized by the economy have a claim to "special consideration"-have been among the most significant insights in twentieth-century Christian theology. Arising out of various theologies of liberation, options for the poor and for people at the margins of society have provided major new impulses for biblical studies, systematic theology, church history, ecclesial practice, and the academic study of religion. Opting for the margins continues to be an important issue at a time when the gap between rich and poor is growing at an alarming rate both in the United States and in many other parts of the world, and when other gaps (based, for example, on differences in gender or race) continue to linger. Recently, however, options for the margins have been challenged by postmodern shifts in intellectual, social, political, and economic realities that often replace preferential options with other emphases, such as general concerns for pluralism, otherness, and difference. Options for the margins are therefore (at best) reduced to the special interests of certain minority groups, or (at worst) rejected as antiquated and irrelevant for the twenty-first century. The essays in this volume show how some forms of postmodern thought and theology can mask patterns of oppression and provide an excuse for deafness to voices from the margins. The authors, writing from a wide variety of national, ethnic, and theological perspectives, seek to revive the preferential option for the poor for the postmodern world, showing how options for the margins can engage postmodernity in new ways and break new ground in religious, theological, and ethical, as well as social, political, and economic thinking. The essays connect philosophical and theological arguments to the concrete realities of the postmodern world and to uncover new sources of energy in the life and death struggles of people across the globe.

Poverty. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Still, poverty is an ever-present reality, even in so-called first world nations like the United States. If the Holy Spirit is the member of the Trinity that is ever present in our world, perhaps the Spirit can be a resource to address poverty. In this pneumatological theology of poverty, Brandon Kertson explores the current state of poverty in the United States, arguing its complexities also require complex answers demanding a pneumatological approach that has yet to be offered. Using Renewal theology and pneumatology, Kertson develops a pneumatological four-fold gospel based on Jesus’ pneumatic declaration of Luke 4. He explores how the Spirit addresses poverty through Jesus and the historic and global church, and how we can begin to address poverty through the Spirit today. The Spirit as savior, baptizer, healer, and entelechy of the kingdom lays the foundation for a holistic response to the complex problem of poverty in our country.

The churches, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in the forefront, played a remarkable role in the liberation of South Africa. This book offers a scholarly analysis of a selection of Tutu's sermons, speeches and statements over a period of fifteen years. The structure of argumentation in his sermons and speeches is explained, the striking dialogical style of communication of his prophetic preaching is displayed, and his success in motivating oppressed people to keep on hoping and to act in a peaceful way for liberation is discussed. Tutu has shown, by preaching in a prophetic mode during the dark days of apartheid, that the Christian religion is, indeed, a major motivational force for liberation. This analysis yields a handful of practical theological insights for the communication of the gospel.
