Die Autorin untersucht das interdependente Verhältnis von Sein und Sprache im Rekurs auf die aristotelischen Schriften Metaphysik, De Interpretatione und Topik. Entsprechend liefert sie einen Beitrag zur ontologischen Forschung. Sein und Sprache machen die vom Menschen wahrnehmbare Wirklichkeit aus - als zwei Seiten einer Medaille. Die Frage nach dem Sein ist immer zugleich auch diejenige nach der Sprache. Über die bedeutsame Sprache wird der erkennende Zugang zum Sein möglich, das Sein wird in der Sprache offenbar. Die aristotelische Philosophie versteht sich in der Konsequenz als Erste Wissenschaft und vertritt einen übergreifenden Anspruch: grundsätzlich, im Rahmen der Frage nach der Sprache und dem Sein, kann ihr alles thematisch werden. Implizit wird damit nach nichts Geringerem als der Möglichkeit von Sprache, Kommunikation und Erkenntnis gefragt. Umgekehrt bedürfen Sprache und Erkenntnis der Referenz auf das Wirkliche, um bedeutsam und sinnerfüllt zu sein. Unter der Prämisse dieser doppelten Perspektive kann die aristotelische Philosophie ihren primärwissenschaftlichen Anspruch behaupten. Fundament der grundlegenden Wechselseitigkeit ist das to ti en einai, das wohl mit Recht als einer der wichtigsten Kernbegriffe der aristotelischen Philosophie bezeichnet werden kann.

Mit ›Haltung‹ verbindet man in der Regel eine gewisse Unbeugsamkeit gegen die Wechselfälle der Zeit. Der Autor versucht mit Rückgriff auf das antike Konzept der »hexis«, das in den aristotelischen Ethiken als Bestimmung der Tugenden auftritt, Haltung anders, nämlich aus dem Geist der Bewegung zu denken: Haltung hat nichts Starres, sondern verfügt als Instrument der Zeitlichkeit vielmehr über einen subversiven, flexiblen Sinn für den »kairos« einer Situation. Nur so kann Haltung zum Vermögen werden, Grund des eigenen Handelns zu bleiben. Haltung antwortet damit auf ein anthropologisches wie politisches Grundproblem: Wie kann es gelingen, als Mitglied einer dynamischen Gemeinschaft weder im Strudel ihrer Bewegungen unterzugehen noch aber völlig aus ihr herauszufallen und zum Einzelgänger zu werden? Die antike Kulturgeschichte, der in diesem Band kursorisch nachgegangen wird, hat mit den Mitteln der Philosophie, Kunst, Gymnastik und Medizin immer wieder versucht, dieses Problem mit Entwürfen einer exemplarischen ›guten Haltung‹ (euexia) verbindlich zu beantworten. Diese Verbindlichkeit zu hinterfragen, gehört aber selbst zum Vermögen von Haltung, die damit auf entschiedene Weise kritisch wird.
