This book will bring you joy. Preaching week in and week out can be a burden. This book invites you into a way of experiencing preaching that brings life back into your pulpit. Contemporary metaphor theory provides new methods for engaging the biblical text and shaping sermons that matter. With humor and insight, Justin Rossow harnesses the most relevant advances in metaphor theory to empower your preaching and equip you to impact the everyday lives of real people. You'll be delighted at the quality of the example sermons and anxious to put these tools to work in your own preaching ministry. This book is not about making your propositional point a little more interesting; this book will change how you imagine the preaching task. Refreshingly faithful, theoretically nuanced, purposefully practical, and at times laugh out loud funny, Preaching Metaphor will help you fall in love with preaching all over again. Praise for Preaching Metaphor "A pioneering and incredible piece of work. Rossow's treatment of metaphor and culture is not only enjoyable, it makes you wonder how often we fill in the blanks of biblical images with our own cultural narratives without giving it a second much less passing thought. I know of no other work that offers such a well-developed theory of metaphor for preaching." -Len Sweet best-selling author, professor, and owner of PreachTheStory.com "Remarkably clear, winsome, compelling, and practical. This book is not only a must for the preacher's library, but a gift to the preacher." -Leopoldo A. Sánchez M. author of Sculptor Spirit: Models of Sanctification from Spirit Christology and professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary-St. Louis "In an era when images saturate our existence and capture our attention, Justin Rossow provides what a visual generation needs: a way to create compelling sermons that stick-for both the preacher and the hearer. In a humble, winsome, and knowledgeable way, Preaching Metaphor presents the practice of harnessing imagery as a means of communicating Gospel truth. You'll find this to be a practical manual for powerful preaching!" -Michael W. Newman, author of Gospel DNA: Five Markers of a Flourishing Church "Every once in a while, I've read things that make me wonder how they're possible, and I really thank God for letting me read them. This book is one of those. Praise God for Justin." -Conrad Gempf author of Jesus Asked: What He Wanted to Know and lecturer in New Testament at London School of Theology, UK. From the introduction: "I just want to help make next Sunday a little easier for you and for your hearers. And maybe, if things go as planned, I might even help you delight in the preaching task a little more than you have in awhile. You see, I am on your side; I think what you do week in and week out is amazing. And I want to help. In order to help, I want to talk about metaphor. I know, I know; talking about metaphor sounds all artistic and poetic-and it can be-but, as we shall see, metaphor is also a fundamental tool for how we make sense of our lives, reach decisions, imagine possibilities, and evaluate outcomes. Because metaphor is a fundamental tool of human thought and experience, getting a better handle on metaphor opens up all kinds of possibilities for reading and preaching Scripture."

G. Campbell Morgan Reprint Series Foreword If it is true that the measure of a person's greatness is their influence, not only on his own time but on future gen- erations, G. Campbell Morgan must be regarded as a great person. His greatness is seen not only in the wide impact of his ministry on both sides of the Atlantic, but in the fact that his books are still read and studied sixty-five years after his death. Named one of the ten greatest preachers of the twentieth-century by the contributing board of Preaching magazine, Morgan made the Bible a new and living book not only to the congregations who listened to him, but the vast multitude of persons who read his books. Fox sixty-seven years Morgan preached and taught the Scriptures and served churches in England and the United States. What is remarkable is that his commentaries and expositions of the Bible still speak to persons of a new millennium. There have been many changes in the world since he faithfully preached and taught the Scriptures, but the wide appeal of his books testify to the timelessness of his message. Although he held pastorates in the Congregational and Presbyterian denominations, he had an ecumenical appeal to persons of all denominations and traditions. The mystic Thomas á Kempis once wrote, "He to whom the eternal word speaks is delivered from many opinions." In one of his sermons, he referred to the words of Amos that there would be a famine for hearing the word of God (Amos 8:11). The timeless work of G. Campbell Morgan addresses that hun- ger, as his books enable his readers to get beyond opinions to the living Word. Wipf and Stock Publishers have rendered a great gift to the religious world in reprinting dozens of Morgan's books. This growing collection makes his books more available, so that readers have an option other than searching the internet for used, and often expensive, copies. Among this collection is the classic The Great Physician and commen- taries on the Gospel of Matthew and John. Persons seeking a living faith and a meaningful encounter with God would profit from reading any of these Morgan books. Near the end of his ministry, in a sermon entitled "But One Thing," Morgan commented on how Portugal changed the words of a coin after Christopher Columbus discovered America. No longer did the inscription say, Ne Plus Ultra (nothing more beyond) but Plus Ultra (more beyond). It is the hope of the G. Campbell Morgan Trust that the reprint- ing of these books will bring readers to the "more beyond," and an even deeper encounter with the Word in Scripture. The Morgan Trust Richard L. The African church needs preachers who preach the Scriptures to bring people to Christ and nurture them in the faith. Yet many are failing at this task. Some use their sermons to promote themselves rather than Christ, while others do not know how to preach from the Scriptures. In Preaching the Scriptures Dr Joel Biwul addresses these problems. Using African stories and illustrations, he clearly sets out the process of preparing and delivering a sermon that is rooted in the Scriptures. He also provides sample sermons and outlines that will help preachers apply these principles in their own preaching preparation.

Stories are a powerful tool in the hands of a preacher. Used poorly, they can become the central focus of a sermon, usurping the rightful place of God’s word as teacher and guide. Used well, they support the cause of truth, bringing the word of God to life with fresh clarity, relevance and power. This concise book serves as an excellent introduction to the role of storytelling in expository preaching. Ed Moll, a seasoned preacher and preaching trainer, offers readers a comprehensive guide to the types of stories that can support biblical teaching, from simple images and metaphors to full-fledged narratives, illustrating how each type can best aid the preacher in teaching the word of God. An excellent resource for both experienced preachers seeking to grow their skill and new preachers just starting out on their journey, this book provides practical exercises to put learning into practice and includes reading lists for those wanting to dive deeper into the topics raised.

In a delightful yet profound reading of the Scriptures, Enter the Story opens up the central stories in the Bible and shows how they are alive in us. These stories happen over and over again, much like a great unfinished symphony, in the lives of those of us who look to Scripture for inspiration. In this sense, the biblical stories are metaphors?events that may have occurred long ago among biblical characters, but also, the same dramas great and small that happen to believers today, every day.
Fran Ferder takes familiar stories from Scripture and shows us what the significant events, or feasts, in the great Christian story mean and how they continue to unfold in our lives -- in ways we do not expect. These old stories are new stories. Unfinished stories. They are our stories. And when we understand them, they can transform our lives.
