The post liberal, cultural-linguistic theology of the Yale School has been one of the most important theological developments in the United States during the latter twentieth century. In this unique book, which combines theological analysis and homiletical reflection,Charles Campbell examines post liberal theology as it is embodied in the work of Hans Frei and develops the implications of this theological position for the theory and practice of preaching. Arguing that the trouble with homiletics today is fundamentally theological, Campbell offers Frei's theological position as a means for enriching the Christian pulpit and renewing the church.

What is the point of preaching? With so many agendas competing for pulpit time these days, it can be easy to forget the exact purpose of our Christian calling: to proclaim God's salvation through Jesus who died and is now resurrected. Preaching Evangelistically looks at the different elements of gospel preaching and how they are best used to effectively proclaim Jesus. They include: sermon setting, text selection, preparation, preaching with biblical authority, giving an invitation, and "hiding behind the cross as you preach." Also here are eyes-on text examples of evangelistic sermons from selected preachers. Cowriter Al Fasol states, "The purpose of our book is to provide information on preaching evangelistically with integrity, with biblical accuracy, with appeal to contemporary listeners, and absolutely for the glory of God."--Back cover.

How can one preach effectively on the death of Jesus to a world jaded by stories of suffering and violence? This exegetical book -- written collectively by six authorities on Scripture -- sheds new light on the tremendous power of preaching to challenge and enlarge the world of the listeners. By probing the accounts of Jesus' death in the Gospel of Mark and in Paul's letters, 'Biblical Preaching on the Death of Jesus' uncovers a vision of divine power and justice that calls us to become partners in God's struggle to overcome suffering and injustice in the world. In the cross, the authors demonstrate, we as Christians are given a symbol of both weakness and defeat and of power and victor. This symbol is a magnificent reminder of the redemption and transformation of lives and situations through Christ's identification with suffering. With unusual success, the six authors have written the entire book as a group undertaking. The result is a testimony to the interrelatedness that is central to the vision of process theology. 'Biblical Preaching on the Death of Jesus' will be of immense help to preachers and to students and scholars of New Testament interpretation and systematic theology.

The Preaching Of Jesus written by William Frank Brosend and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-01 with Religion categories.

Using the findings of historical Jesus studies, William Brosend asks, what is the rhetoric that characterized the preaching of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels, and how may today's preaching benefit from it? This book for preachers and students of preaching helps the reader see four distinct aspects of the rhetoric of Jesus: dialogical (preaching in response to challenges and questions); proclamatory (making bold and authoritative statements); occasionally self-referential (though less so than in the Fourth Gospel); and persistently figurative (illustrating his message through metaphor). Brosend spends one chapter on each of these methods, closing each chapter with a sermon that models that approach and his analysis of it. Sample sermons are by well-known preachers including Fred Craddock, Michael Curry, Tom Long, and Barbara Brown Taylor. Brosend concludes with the implications for modern preaching and a sermon of his own.

The impulse to publish these sermons came to me after I had successfully published my book, For Our Age of Anxiety, based on the Sermon on the Mount. All of these sermons were first written and preached while I was pastor of the Seven Hills Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky where I served for thirty-four years. As I considered the idea of publishing a follow up book of sermons from the remaining chapters of Matthew, I went to my files and began the process of selecting the sermons to be included. After I had selected these sermons, I began to see that they could be put together under the theme of a portrait of Jesus. This book features sermons that focus on the early days of the ministry of Jesus particularly as they related to the ministry of John the Baptist. They also shed some light on the temptations of Jesus in the desert, on the call of those who would be his first disciples, and what is involved in being a disciple of Jesus then and now. Some of the sermons are based on the miracles of Jesus, thus revealing the compassion of Jesus. These sermons also deal with the idea of the Kingdom of God, showing some of the principles and characteristics of the Kingdom. The last two sermons are about the person of Jesus. It is my hope that these sermons will indeed help the reader to draw his or her own mental and spiritual portrait of Jesus.

With its relentless insistence that there is no reality beyond that which we construct, postmodern thought questions the presuppositions of many disciplines, including homiletics. Offering a lively description of the postmodern worldview and its implications for Christian faith, Confessing Jesus Christ by David Lose teaches preachers how to rise to the challenges posed by our postmodern world. Few if any books on preaching offer such a comprehensive investigation of postmodern thought or yield such a wealth of insights for relevant Christian proclamation. Significantly, Lose sees postmodernism not primarily as an obstacle to the church but as an opportunity for it to stand once again on faith alone rather than on attempts to prove the faith. According to Lose, preaching that seeks to be both faithful to the Christian tradition and responsive to our pluralistic, postmodern context is best understood as the public practice of confessing faith in Jesus Christ. He explores the practical implications of a confessional homiletic for preaching and also provides concrete methods for preparing sermons that meaningfully bridge biblical texts and contemporary congregations.
