The Ancient Egyptian Wisdom Texts are a genre of writings from the ancient culture that have survived to the present and provide a vibrant record of the practice of spiritual evolution otherwise known as religion or yoga philosophy in Ancient Egypt. The principle focus of the Wisdom Texts is the cultivation of understanding, peace, harmony, selfless service, self-control, Inner fulfillment and spiritual realization. When these factors are cultivated in human life, the virtuous qualities in a human being begin to manifest and sinfulness, ignorance and negativity diminish until a person is able to enter into higher consciousness, the coveted goal of all civilizations. It is this virtuous mode of life which opens the door to self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment. Therefore, the Wisdom Texts are important scriptures on the subject of human nature, spiritual psychology and mystical philosophy. The teachings presented in the Wisdom Texts form the foundation of religion as well as the guidelines for conducting the affairs of every area of social interaction including commerce, education, the army, marriage, and especially the legal system. These texts were sources for the famous 42 Precepts of Maat of the Pert M Heru (Book of the Dead), essential regulations of good conduct to develop virtue and purity in order to attain higher consciousness and immortality after death.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... NOTE D. THE NATURE OF THE KA Among the various attempts to understand what the Egyptians described as the Ka, little notice seems to have been taken of the examples afforded us in the Precepts of Ptah-hotep. They are the more valuable as being all of one age, and by one writer, so that they must represent and delimit a single conception, and their date is so early--in the Vth Dynasty--that they probably show the original idea. In precept 7 the guest is enjoined not to pierce his host at table with many glances; "it is an abomination to the ka for them to be directed at him." Here the ka is the consciousness or self-consciousness of the man, annoyed by staring. Then in precept i0, " Diminish not the time of following the heart (enjoying pleasures), for that is an abomination to the ka that its moment should be disregarded." The ka, therefore, is the seat of the intention and desire of enjoyment. In precept 8, "The washing of the heart shall not be repeated (words said in passionate relief of the feelings), it is an abomination to the ka" Here the ka suffers the annoyance of another person's ill-temper. In precept i2 a son who is mentally like his father is said to be "thy own son to whom it belongeth that thy ka begat." Here the ka comprises the mental qualities which were inherited, beyond the merely bodily form. And the ka is the seat of generosity and kindness, for in precept 7 "it is the ka that openeth the hands " of the host; and in precept 27 is mentioned the "master on whose ka depend thy provisions." From all these instances we can fairly delimit the ka as being the inner mental consciousness and powers of thought, as apart from the influence of the senses and the communication with the body. The Egyptian argued, "If I burn...

Thoth, Hermes or Djehuty as this book refers to him is a mythical ancient Egyptian (Kemetian) sage whose wisdom is said to have transformed him into a god. Djehuty, who was venerated in Kemet from at least 3000 B.C.E., is credited with the invention of sacred hieroglyphic writing and his figure, portrayed as a scribe with the head of an Ibis, can be seen in many temples and tombs. He is the dispatcher of divine messages and recorder of all human deeds. In the great hall of judgement, the after-life court of the god Asar (Osiris) where the dead are judged, Djehuty would establish whether the deceased had acquired spiritual knowledge and purity, and so deserved a place in Heaven. Djehuty was said to have revealed to the Kemetians (Ancient Native Egyptians) all knowledge on astronomy, architecture, engineering, botany, geometry, medicine and religion, land surveying, and was believed by the ancient Greeks to be the architect of the pyramids. The Greeks, who were in awe of the knowledge and spirituality of the Kemetians, depicted him through their narrow view of the mysteries as Hermes, the messenger of the gods and guider of souls in the realm of the dead. To distinguish the Kemetian Djehuty, from their own, the Greeks referred to him using the title "Trismegistus," meaning Thrice Great, to honor his sublime wisdom. The remnants of the wisdom of Djehuty have been passed on in texts mistakenly referred to today as the Hermetica. Although largely unknown today, the writings attributed to Djehuty have been immensely important in the history of Western thought. They profoundly influenced the Greeks and, through their rediscovery in the fifteenth- century Florence helped to inspire the " Renaissance" which gave birth to our modern age. The list of people who have acknowledged a debt to the wisdom of the Scribe of the gods reads like a "Who's Who" of greatest philosophers, scientists and artists that the West has produced- Leonardo da Vinci, Durer, Botticelli, Roger Bacon, Paracelcus, Thomas More, William Blake, Kepler, Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Sir Walter Raleigh, Milton, Ben Johnson, Daniel Defoe, Shelley, Victor Hugo and Carl Jung. It heavily influenced Shakespeare, John Donne, John Dee and all the poet philosophers who surrounded the court of Queen Elizabeth I, as well as the founding scientists of the Royal Society in London, and even the leaders who inspired the Protestant reformation in Europe. The list is endless with the Djehuty's influence reaching well beyond the frontiers of Europe. Islamic mystics and philosophers also trace their inspiration back to the Scribe of the gods, and the esoteric tradition of the Jews equated him with their mysterious prophet Enoch. The Hermetica, as Djehuty's works are referred to today act like a cornerstone of Western Culture. In substance and importance it is equal to well known eastern scriptures like Upanishads, the Dhammapada and the Tao Te Ching. Yet unlike these texts which are readily available and widely read, the works of Djehuty have been lost under the dead weight of academic translations, Christian prejudice and occult obscurities.

Excerpt from Notes for the Nile: Together With a Metrical Rendering of the Hymns of Ancient Egypt and of the Precepts of Ptah-Hotep (the Oldest Book in the World) A Return To Egypt There is a land where Time no count can keep, Where works of men imperishable seem; Where through death's barren solitude doth gleam Undying hope for them that sow and reap: Yea, land of life where death is but a deep Warm slumber, a communicable dream, Where from the silent grave far voices stream Of those who tell their secrets in their sleep. Land of the palm-tree and the pyramid, Land of sweet waters from a mystic urn, Land of sure rest where suns shine on for ever, I left thee - in thy sands a heart was hid, My life, my love, were cast upon thy river. And, lo! I to seek Osiris I return. H. D. R. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
