WHAT IS PREDIABETES? HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW If you've been told you have diabetes, there are steps you can take to prevent prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes. The most obvious is taking a look at your food choices. By eating whole (minimally or unprocessed) foods (ie, whole wheat vs blanched white flour-based products, white rice, potato chips-which are a far cry from a baked potato), addressing overweight and staying at a healthy weight, and committing to some physical activity-which can be a walk or two daily-is enough to help get your blood glucose level back into the normal range. That's the key to assuring you avoid not only the onset of diabetes but all the related complications including heart disease, vision, loss, nerve damage, and kidney failure. How much do you know about this condition and what it might mean for you? What Are the Symptoms that Suggest You May Be Heading Toward Diabetes? Diabetes develops very gradually, so when you're in the prediabetes stage-when your blood glucose level is higher than it should be-you may not have any symptoms at all. You may, however, notice that: you're hungrier than normal you're losing weight, despite eating more you're thirstier than normal you have to go to the bathroom more frequently you're more tired than usual All of those are typical symptoms associated with diabetes, so if you're in the early stages of diabetes, you may notice them. Recognizing Prediabetes: Common Causes and Risk Factors Prediabetes develops when your body begins to have trouble using the hormone insulin. Insulin is necessary to transport glucose-what your body uses for energy-into the cells via the bloodstream. In pre-diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or it doesn't use it well (that's called insulin resistance). If you don't have enough insulin or if you're insulin resistant, you can build up too much glucose in your blood, leading to a higher-than-normal blood glucose level and perhaps prediabetes. Researchers aren't sure what exactly causes the insulin process to go awry in some people. There are several risk factors, though, that make it more likely that you'll develop pre-diabetes. Prediabetes affects nearly 90 million U.S. adults and more than 374 million people worldwide. But what exactly is prediabetes, and how should it be treated? Individuals with prediabetes have a high risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes. Diabetes currently affects approximately 30 million adults in the U.S. and 463 million people worldwide, and type 2 diabetes represents 90-95% of the diabetes burden. Individuals with prediabetes also face increased risks of developing several complications including heart disease. Intervention at the prediabetes stage can help prevent progression to type 2 diabetes, and even lead to remission of prediabetes and a return to normal blood glucose regulation (NGR). However, a deeper understanding of the pathobiology of prediabetes is critical to the discovery and delivery of programs for preventing of diabetes. Focusing on prediabetes is compelling: Understanding the numerous risk factors that trigger the initial escape from NGR toward prediabetes provides critical information that enables the precise and timely targeting of preventive interventions to at-risk persons. This book is for clinicians, researchers, public health practitioners and policy makers. It begins with an overview of the demographic, anthropometric, biobehavioral and biochemical factors that drive the transition from normal blood glucose to prediabetes. Emerging knowledge from the fields of genomics, transcriptomics, microRNAs, metabolomics and microbiomics is incorporated into a comprehensive treatise on the pathobiology of prediabetes. Next, the focus shifts to evidence-based management of prediabetes and prevention of type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes seldom remits spontaneously. Lifestyle modification and certain medications can prevent progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes and may even induce remission of prediabetes in some people. Landmark diabetes prevention trials are discussed through the prism of their successful translatability in communities around the world. Emphasis is placed on practical adaptations that would enable cost-effective community diabetes prevention initiatives. Interventions utilizing lifestyle modification are prioritized over medications, but novel approaches (including cyclical medication strategy, designer nutraceuticals and metabolic surgery) are also discussed. Current lifestyle intervention protocols have been more effective at preventing progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes than they have been at restoring NGR. This book makes the case that reversal of prediabetes and restoration of normal blood glucose levels carries numerous benefits and ought to be the primary goal of intervention in people with prediabetes.

As we go about our daily lives, it's easy to overlook the impact that our food choices have on our health. Yet now more than ever, it's become increasingly clear that what we eat plays a crucial role in determining our overall wellness. For those diagnosed with prediabetes—a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes—paying attention to the food we eat is especially important. Making healthy dietary choices can be daunting, but when it comes to preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes, a nutritious diet is one of the best ways to improve your overall health. Prediabetes is a widespread condition that affects millions of Americans today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 84 million people in the United States currently have prediabetes—and a staggering 90% of them are unaware that they have it. This lack of awareness is a significant problem, as untreated prediabetes can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes, a potentially life-threatening condition. The good news is that prediabetes can often be reversed through a combination of lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments. So what does a prediabetes diet entail? Simply put, it involves making healthier food choices that help to stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The first step is to cut back on processed foods, refined sugars, and carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar spikes and contribute to insulin resistance. Instead, focus on incorporating more whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats into your diet. These foods are lower in calories and higher in fiber, vitamins, and nutrients, making them ideal choices for those looking to improve their overall health. Research has shown that a diet rich in whole foods can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that people with prediabetes who followed a specially designed diet and exercise program were able to reduce their risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes by over 50% compared to those who made no changes to their lifestyle. Another study published in the journal Diabetes Care found that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products was associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Of course, making dietary changes can be challenging, especially in a world where junk food and processed snacks are ubiquitous. But the benefits of a healthy diet are undeniable—not only can it help to prevent type 2 diabetes, but it can also reduce the risk of other health problems like heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. And with the right tools and support, anyone can make positive changes to their eating habits. In this guide, we'll explore the ins and outs of a prediabetes diet, from the foods to eat (and avoid) to practical strategies for making healthy eating a part of your daily routine. We'll also provide a 5-step guide on how to get started with a prediabetes diet and some meal recipes that you can try out. Read on to learn more about the power of nutrition and how you can use it to manage your health.
