Il Convegno si è posto l’obiettivo di considerare, e in qualche caso di ripensare, il ruolo della Calabria nel Seicento nel contesto più ampio delle vicende storiche del Regno di Napoli e nell’ambito, ancora più allargato, di quelle del bacino del Mediterraneo al centro del quale la regione si trova collocata. Da tempo si è messa in discussione la rigidità con la quale fino ad alcuni decenni or sono il Seicento era stato considerato in numerosi ambiti della ricerca storica. Lo si è fatto sul piano istituzionale, con la messa in discussione di concetti quali quello di rifeudalizzazione e la rivalutazione del ruolo delle amministrazioni cittadine; analogo fenomeno è avvenuto da tempo in ambito economico, con il riesame, pure per gli Stati di area mediterranea, del concetto stesso di crisi generale del Seicento da parte della storiografia. Nuovi orizzonti si sono dischiusi anche in ambito sociale, con una profonda riconsiderazione dell’eziologia e della portata delle rivolte che hanno coinvolto anche il Regno di Napoli e la Calabria durante il Seicento. Il convegno, inoltre, ha approfondito gli aspetti religiosi che hanno caratterizzato il secolo coinvolgendo la storia civile e culturale della Calabria e del Regno di Napoli. L’indagine si è avvalsa, inoltre, dell’ausilio di altre discipline, il cui apporto ha consentito di integrare il quadro complessivo: l’archeologia dell’età moderna, la storia dell’arte e la letteratura, in particolare, negli ultimi anni hanno fornito dati innovativi di estremo interesse di cui la storiografia dovrà necessariamente tenere conto nel verificare, ed eventualmente aggiornare, lo stato delle conoscenze e del dibattito.

Nei due millenni della storia delle Chiese cristiane, la predicazione ha rappresentato un momento fondamentale per la trasmissione, dal clero ai fedeli, di dottrine in cui credere e di comportamenti da tenere. Un’attività che ha conosciuto mutamenti ed evoluzioni, qui presi in esame: tra tarda antichità e secoli centrali del medioevo si predicava poco e male, sulla scorta dei sermoni latini di Agostino, Gregorio Magno e altri, mentre negli ultimi secoli dell’età di mezzo i frati mendicanti avevano portato letteralmente i pulpiti fuori dalle chiese. Nel Rinascimento predicatori come Bernardino da Siena divennero “divi” e capiscuola, propugnando un comportamento organico all’egemonia del ceto mercantile borghese, anche grazie allo sfruttamento dell’invenzione della stampa. In seguito, per il contrasto tra Chiesa di Roma e Riformatori d’oltralpe, l’attività di predicazione fu sottoposta al controllo inquisitoriale, mentre con il prevalere della Controriforma le pubblicazioni di prediche diventarono addirittura una forma di letteratura, in grado di coinvolgere persino poeti come Marino.

Confraternities were - and are - religious brotherhoods for lay people to promote their religious life in common. Though designed to prepare for the afterlife, they were fully involved in the social, political and cultural life of the community and could affect all men and women, as members or as the recipients of charity. Confraternities organised a great range of devotional, cultural and indeed artistic activities in addition to other functions such as the provision of dowries and the escort of condemned men to the scaffold. Other works have studied the local activities of specific confraternities, but this is the first to attempt a broad survey of such organisations across the breadth of early modern Italy. Christopher Black demonstrates clearly the extent, diversity and influence of confraternal behaviour, and shows how such brotherhoods adapted to the religious and social crises of the sixteenth century - thus illuminating current debates about Catholic Reform, the Counter-Reformation, poverty, philanthropy and social control.

This book studies the uses of orality in Italian society, across all classes, from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, with an emphasis on the interrelationships between oral communication and the written word. The Introduction provides an overview of the topic as a whole and links the chapters together. Part 1 concerns public life in the states of northern, central, and southern Italy. The chapters examine a range of performances that used the spoken word or song: concerted shouts that expressed the feelings of the lower classes and were then recorded in writing; the proclamation of state policy by town criers; songs that gave news of executions; the exercise of power relations in society as recorded in trial records; and diplomatic orations and interactions. Part 2 centres on private entertainments. It considers the practices of the performance of poetry sung in social gatherings and on stage with and without improvisation; the extent to which lyric poets anticipated the singing of their verse and collaborated with composers; performances of comedies given as dinner entertainments for the governing body of republican Florence; and a reading of a prose work in a house in Venice, subsequently made famous through a printed account. Part 3 concerns collective religious practices. Its chapters study sermons in their own right and in relation to written texts, the battle to control spaces for public performance by civic and religious authorities, and singing texts in sacred spaces.

Sin dalle origini della nostra tradizione romanza il fascino dell’allegoria promana dal suo essere un oggetto di riflessione problematico e sfuggente nel suo carattere di alieniloquium che rinvia ad un’alterità: un tropus che «aliud enim sonat, aliud intelligitur», capace di collegare il «visibile» con l’«invisibile», il profano con il sacro, l’immanente con il trascendente. La sua connaturata ambivalenza, che nei secoli la raffina sia come strumento concettuale dell’interpretazione sia come modalità poetica ed estetica dell’espressione, fa dell’allegoria una categoria cardine, di assoluto rilievo per la conoscenza delle strutture culturali e delle forme rappresentative che contraddistinsero la mentalità e la sensibilità delle diverse epoche storiche. Il volume, che comprende saggi volti ad affrontare la questione da angolazioni critiche e metodologiche differenti, intende raccogliere la sfida ambiziosa di una perlustrazione sistematica sulla presenza e i caratteri della fenomenologia allegorica nel teatro della prima modernità. Nella drammaturgia italiana ed europea tra Cinque e Settecento emerge, infatti, con evidenza una dimensione allegorica che permette agli autori, da una parte, di veicolare messaggi etici, teologici e politici – e al fondo di giustificare la ‘moralità’ del teatro – , dall’altra di sfidare l’intelligenza dell’interprete in un raffinato esercizio critico volto a riscoprire i significati reconditi dei testi. I contributi, qui raccolti, tracciano molteplici percorsi, dall’analisi delle strategie compositive attraverso le quali si attua il travestimento allegorico nei diversi generi della ‘rappresentazione’ – dal dramma pastorale al balletto, dalla tragedia al dramma per musica –, all’esame dell’affioramento di linguaggi e codici esoterici complessi, sino allo studio della rifunzionalizzazione in chiave allegorica di personaggi mitologici.
