Nei due millenni della storia delle Chiese cristiane, la predicazione ha rappresentato un momento fondamentale per la trasmissione, dal clero ai fedeli, di dottrine in cui credere e di comportamenti da tenere. Un’attività che ha conosciuto mutamenti ed evoluzioni, qui presi in esame: tra tarda antichità e secoli centrali del medioevo si predicava poco e male, sulla scorta dei sermoni latini di Agostino, Gregorio Magno e altri, mentre negli ultimi secoli dell’età di mezzo i frati mendicanti avevano portato letteralmente i pulpiti fuori dalle chiese. Nel Rinascimento predicatori come Bernardino da Siena divennero “divi” e capiscuola, propugnando un comportamento organico all’egemonia del ceto mercantile borghese, anche grazie allo sfruttamento dell’invenzione della stampa. In seguito, per il contrasto tra Chiesa di Roma e Riformatori d’oltralpe, l’attività di predicazione fu sottoposta al controllo inquisitoriale, mentre con il prevalere della Controriforma le pubblicazioni di prediche diventarono addirittura una forma di letteratura, in grado di coinvolgere persino poeti come Marino.

L'analisi del complesso rapporto fra santità femminile, isteria e altri disturbi mentali fra Medioevo ed età moderna: questo l'importante e affascinante oggetto di cui tratta questo libro. Si indaga se le estatiche, le visionarie e più in generale le mistiche – sante, beate o venerabili –, lungi dall'essere in preda a estasi e visioni, fossero in realtà affette da disturbi della personalità e del comportamento. Attraverso una rigorosa analisi delle fonti, l'autore osserva da vicino il comportamento delle donne mistiche con la lente del moderno codice medico e arriva a concludere che la loro condotta può essere spesso ricollegata a standard e profili patologici più o meno documentabili. Dealing with the issue of ecclesiastical censorship and control over reading and readers, this study challenges the traditional view that during the eighteenth century the Catholic Church in Italy underwent an inexorable decline. It reconstructs the strategies used by the ecclesiastical leadership to regulate the press and culture during a century characterized by important changes, from the spread of the Enlightenment to the creation of a state censorship apparatus. Based on the archival records of the Roman Inquisition and the Congregation of the Index of Forbidden Books preserved in the Vatican, it provides a comprehensive analysis of the Catholic Church’s endeavour to keep literature and reading in check by means of censorship and the promotion of a "good" press. The crisis of the Inquisition system did not imply a general diminution of the Church’s involvement in controlling the press. Rather than being effective instruments of repression, the Inquisition and the Index combined to create an ideological apparatus to resist new ideas and to direct public opinion. This was a network mainly inspired by Counter-Enlightenment principles which would go on to influence the Church’s action well beyond the eighteenth century. This book is an English translation of Il governo della lettura: Chiesa e libri nell’Italia del Settecento (Bologna: Il Mulino, 2007).

This book studies the uses of orality in Italian society, across all classes, from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, with an emphasis on the interrelationships between oral communication and the written word. The Introduction provides an overview of the topic as a whole and links the chapters together. Part 1 concerns public life in the states of northern, central, and southern Italy. The chapters examine a range of performances that used the spoken word or song: concerted shouts that expressed the feelings of the lower classes and were then recorded in writing; the proclamation of state policy by town criers; songs that gave news of executions; the exercise of power relations in society as recorded in trial records; and diplomatic orations and interactions. Part 2 centres on private entertainments. It considers the practices of the performance of poetry sung in social gatherings and on stage with and without improvisation; the extent to which lyric poets anticipated the singing of their verse and collaborated with composers; performances of comedies given as dinner entertainments for the governing body of republican Florence; and a reading of a prose work in a house in Venice, subsequently made famous through a printed account. Part 3 concerns collective religious practices. Its chapters study sermons in their own right and in relation to written texts, the battle to control spaces for public performance by civic and religious authorities, and singing texts in sacred spaces.
