The Art Of Ancient Greece written by J. J. Pollitt and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Art categories.

This book, a companion volume to Professor Pollitt's The Art of Rome: Sources and Documents (published by the Press in 1983), presents a comprehensive collection in translation of ancient literary evidence relating to Greek sculpture, painting, architecture, and the decorative arts. Its purpose is to make this important evidence available to students who are not specialists in the Classical languages or Classical archaeology. The author's translations of a wide selection of Greek and Latin texts are accompanied by an introduction, explanatory commentary, and a full bibliography. An earlier version of this book was published twenty-five years ago by Prentice-Hall. In this new publication Professor Pollitt has added a considerable number of new passages, revised some of his earlier translations and presented the texts in a different order which allows the reader to follow more easily the development of sculpture and painting as perceived by the ancient writers. The new and substantial bibliography, organised by topics as they appear in the book, emphasises works that deal directly with the literary sources or that supplement our knowledge of the personalities and monuments described in the sources. This collection will be welcomed by students and teachers of Greek art who have long been in need of an authoritative and reliable sourcebook for their subject.

"This new and richly illustrated overview of Greek painting combines a fresh scholarly approach to visual arts with the most complete survey to date of the painted monuments of classical antiquity. The Art of Painting in Ancient Greece covers a wide chronological and geographical span, from the Bronze Age murals of Knossos, Santorini and Mycenae to the opulent villas of the Roman Empire, from Anatolia and Egypt in the East to Campania and Etruria in the West. Surveying the techniques, materials, and works produced, as well as ancient literary accounts, the book engages the five main lines of inquiry: Why did the Greeks cover the walls of their sanctuaries, agoras, palaces, homes, and even their tombs with painted images? What topics, real or imaginary, did they choose to depict? How were those images created? What were the techniques employed and the materials used? Who painted those images? And how does the spectacular phenomenon of Greek monumental painting compare with other branches of Greek art, from mosaics and vase painting to sculpture?"--

In his introduction, Stelios Lydakis notes, "It would be impossible for an art historian to study the works of antiquity without extensive reference to their influence on the art of the centuries that followed." Lydakis provides a complete history of ancient Greek painting from the earliest examples in Crete, Thera, and Mycenae to those of the classical and Roman epochs. Through a multitude of examples, he shows how these ancient works shaped modern ones. The literary references he considers include the works of Lucian, Philostratos, Pausanias, and Pliny the Elder. The works of art reproduced include wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos, Thera, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis; vases from the Mycenaean through the Classical periods; reliefs from the Parthenon; and mosaics from Pompeii and Delos. The book also features paintings made in later centuries by such artists as Mantegna, Titian, Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens that were inspired by antique models.
