Computation of the motions has been the primary aim Of this work. Putting the results in the form of a star catalogue for the epoch 1900 is a natural method of exhibiting these results and is, apparently, the most useful way in which they could have been presented; but it has not been at any time the first consideration. The founding of the Dudley Observatory at Albany, N.Y., in 1852 was a milestone in humanity's age-old quest to understand the heavens. As the best equipped astronomical observatory in the U.S. led by the first American to hold a Ph.D. in astronomy, Benjamin Apthorp Gould Jr., the observatory helped pioneer world-class astronomy in America. It also proclaimed Albany's status as a major national center of culture, knowledge and affluence. This book explores the story of the Dudley Observatory as a 150 year long episode in civic astronomy. The story ranges from a bitter civic controversy to a venture into space, from the banks of the Hudson River to the highlands of Argentina. Star catalogues are important tools for the geodesist in the determination of astronomic position and azimuth. Fundamental general catalogues contain the most accurate stellar positions and proper motions. Like other users, the geodesist depends on astrometrists for the discussion and development of fundamental general catalogues. The internationally accepted FK4 is the best contemporary fundamental general catalogue. An expanded and improved revision, the FK5, is planned for completion by 1980. Because of increasing accuracy requirements for astronomic position and azimuth, it is desirable that the geodesist be aware of uncertainties contained within catalogues. The general development of star catalogues is included as background information. (Author).
