प्रायः प्रेमचन्द के पाठक उन्हें यथार्थवाद के प्रवर्तक और किसानी जीवन के चितेरा मानते हैं। सही भी है। यह प्रेमचन्द का एक आयाम है। किन्तु प्रेमचन्द द्वारा प्रवर्तित यथार्थवाद सिर्फ एक साहित्यिक प्रवृत्ति नहीं है। उनका यथार्थवाद भारतीय इतिहास के यथार्थ से उद्भूत एक विराट् पहचान है जिसको सरसरी दृष्टि से देखकर साहित्यिक प्रवृत्ति के रूप में परिभाषित करना इतिहास को अनदेखा करना है। अतः यह आवश्यक है कि उनकी यथार्थ-दृष्टि के मूल में स्थित इतिहास के विस्तृत फलक को देखें और परखें। प्रेमचन्द सम्बन्धी इस अध्ययन का मूल उद्देश्य यही है, जिसमें सिर्फ प्रेमचन्द को ही नहीं पहचाना गया है बल्कि उनके समय ने भी मूर्तरूप ले लिया है। इस अर्थ में प्रेमचन्द का आस्वादन समान्तरतः संस्कृति का गम्भीर विश्लेषण भी है। प्रेमचन्द की विपुल सम्भावनाओं को दृष्टि में रखकर ही इस ग्रंथ का शीर्षक ‘प्रेमचन्द के आयाम’ रखा गया है। इस ग्रंथ की विशेषता यह है कि इसमें भारत के विभिन्न गाँवों, कस्बों, शहरों और महानगरों के लेखकों के आलेख हैं। इसमें हिन्दी के प्रतिष्ठित समीक्षकों के साथ-साथ उभरते लेखकों के विचार भी शामिल हैं। प्रेमचन्द के बहाने अपने समय का पुनर्मूल्यांकन इन आलेखों का अभीष्ट है।
