Several potential sorbent materials containing iron oxides were prepared and evaluated for potential to remove divalent metals from waste waters. These included a ferrihydrite-coated sand, maghemite incorporated in Dowex[Trademark] ion exchange resin, gothite and two thermally activated ferrihydrites. Attempts to prepare sorbents from steel shot by coating with ferrihydrite or by thermal oxidization resulted in cemented solids rather than pellets. Ferrihydrite activated at 295°C had a surface area of 113-202 m2/g, followed by gothite at 72-92 m2/g and ferrihydrite-coated sand at 0.78-1.4 m2/g. Zinc adsorption was evaluated by placing 5 g ferrihydrite-coated sand, 0.1 g maghemite in Dowex or 0.1 g gothite in batch reactors containing 40-50 mL of zinc solution, adjusting to various pH values, allowing to react for 96 hours, and analyzing the supernatant for zinc. The data fitted poorly to an ion exchange model using nonlinear regression. The adsorption site densities determined from the regression analysis were 8.0x10−8 moles per gram of ferrihydrite-coated sand and 4.1x10−5 moles per gram of White. Maghemite in Dowex did not provide any additonal zinc removal capacity in excess of the ion exchange capacity of the resin. Kinetic experiments showed that zinc adsorption onto ferrihydrite-coated sand was 86% complete after 96 hours. Based upon this study, the most promising sorbent appears to be gothite, although the "activated ferrihydrites" are also worthy of further study. Neither ferrihydrite-coated sand and maghemite in Dowex appear to be practical sorbents, based on their low zinc adsorption site density. Maghemite in Dowex might be useful in applications requiring magnetic sorbents.

The overall objective of this research was to evaluate a Mn oxide-coated granular activated carbon (MnGAC) for the removal and recovery of metals from wastewaters. The composite adsorbent was prepared by coating M-n-oxide onto granular activated carbon. Three coating methods (adsorption, precipitation, and dry oxidation) were developed and studied in this research. The adsorbent (MnTOG) prepared by a dry oxidation method had the highest Cu(II) adsorption capacity of the three synthesis methods. In multiple adsorption/regeneration cycle tests, MnTOG had better Cu(II) removal relative to those adsorbents prepared by other methods. MnTOG had the ability to remove Cu(II) and Cd(II) to trace level (

In general, groundwater is a preferred source of drinking water because of its convenient availability and its constant and good quality. However this source is vulnerable to contamination by several substances. Acceptable quality limits relative to micropollutant contents in drinking water are becoming increasingly lower and efficient elimination treatment processes are being implemented in order to meet these requirements. Metals contaminants at low concentration are difficult to remove from water. Chemical precipitation and other methods become inefficient when contaminants are present in trace concentrations and the process of adsorption is one of the few alternatives available for such situations. This book describes the adsorption method in the removal of selected heavy metals present as cations (Cd2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+) or oxyanions (Cr(VI) and As(V)) using iron oxide coated sand (IOCS) and granular ferric hydroxide (GFH). The effects of pH, natural organic matter (fulvic acid (FA)) and interfering ions (PO43-, Ca2+) on the adsorption efficiency were also assessed. The sorption reactions that take place at the surface of the adsorbent were also described through the surface complexation modelling for Cd2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+ adsorption. Batch adsorption tests and rapid small scale column tests (RSST) were used as laboratory methods.

Among various water and wastewater treatment technologies, the adsorption process is considered better because of lower cost, simple design and easy operation. Activated carbon (a universal adsorbent) is generally used for the removal of diverse types of pollutants from water and wastewater. Research is now being directed towards the modification of carbon surfaces to enhance its adsorption potential towards specific pollutants. However, widespread use of commercial activated carbon is sometimes restricted especially in developing or poor countries due to its higher costs. Attempts are therefore being made to develop inexpensive adsorbents utilizing abundant natural materials, agricultural and industrial waste materials. Use of waste materials as low-cost adsorbents is attractive due to their contribution in the reduction of costs for waste disposal, therefore contributing to environmental protection. This e-book explores knowledge on recent developments in adsorbents synthesis and their use in water pollution control. This handy reference work is intended for researchers and scientists actively engaged in the study of adsorption and the development and application of efficient adsorption technology for water treatment. This e-book covers a wide range of topics including modeling aspects of adsorption process and the applications of conventional and non-conventional adsorbents in water remediation emphasizing sorption mechanisms of different pollutants on the adsorbents.

A pilot study conducted at the Gilze water treatment plant of Water Supply North West Brabant demonstrated that adsorptive filtration has several potential advantages over floc filtration, namely: longer filter runs due to slower head loss development; better filtrate quality; shorter ripening time; and less backwash water use. In existing groundwater treatment plants, the high iron (II) adsorption capacity of the iron oxide coated filter media makes it potentially possible to switch the governing mode of operation from floc filtration to adsorptive filtration. To achieve this two options can be considered: iron (II) adsorption under anoxic conditions followed by oxidation with oxygen-rich water; and adsorption of iron (II) in the presence of oxygen and simultaneous oxidation. The first option might be attractive specifically when two filtration steps are available.

Two types of carbon based iron-containing adsorbents, As-GAC and FeOMC, were developed for arsenic removal from drinking water in this dissertation. Granular activated carbon-based iron-containing adsorbents (As-GAC) was developed by primarily using GAC as a supporting medium for ferric iron that was impregnated by ferrous chloride (FeCl2) treatment, followed by chemical oxidation. An ordered nano-structured adsorbent, iron-containing ordered mesoporous carbon (FeOMC) was synthesized and developed by involving in synthesis of ordered silica template SBA-15, in situ polymerization of mono acrylic acid (AA) in the silica template followed by carbonization and template removal to obtain ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC), and iron impregnation. Adsorbents were developed by optimizing the preparation conditions, including initial Fe concentration, oxidant type and dosage, and AC or OMC types, etc. and they were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses, etc. The ability of adsorbents for arsenic removal was evaluated by both batch and column studies. Effects of ionic strength, pH, and other competing constituents on the arsenic removal were also studied in batch systems. Redox transformation and surface characteristics of carbon based adsorbents were investigated. Adsorption of arsenic on adsorbents was modeled by the surface complexation model.
