Citadels Of Zion written by Robert Milton Winter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06 with categories.

In a previous study, Outposts of Zion: A History of Mississippi Presbyterians in the Nineteenth Century, Robert Milton Winter succeeded masterfully in portraying the theology, practices, worship, and work of pioneer Presbyterians-including missions to the Indians, the Civil War, and the development of women's service to the Church. The two-volume Citadels of Zion combines the coherent, overall narrative with dozens of vignettes to construct a mosaic of Presbyterian work and worship. His consistent style-appreciative realism-permits him to be critical and respectful at the same time. As just one important example, he sets the defection of many Presbyterian congregations in the 1970s and afterwards in the context of historic "realignments" of Mississippi Protestant denominations and in national politics. In vignettes and sidebars, he quotes founders of the National Presbyterian Church (as it was first termed) and the regional and national leaders of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. (PCUS) and the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. (UPUSA). He treats the reasons Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) members cited for the split, but also points to underlying racism and sexism that were pervasive but unacknowledged. He follows the divisions that occurred in each presbytery and in many of the congregations and recounts the subsequent repentance of PCA leaders in 2006 concerning the racist proclivities of some early leaders. Winter memorializes individual contributions of hundreds of Mississippi Presbyterians-those who led Women of the Church, Presbyterian Women, African American caucuses, pioneers in ordination and mission work from all backgrounds, civil rights leaders, seminary faculty, long-serving pastors and church staff members. He writes of the development, vitality, and sometimes the demise of small congre¬gations as well as large ones. For decades, Winter served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Naturally, he draws many illustrations and insights from the inner workings of that congregation. William F. Winter, and elder in the Fondren Presbyterian Church of Jackson was Governor of Mississippi in the early 1980s. Governor Winter, who spent most of the rest of his career in other public service, provides a foreword and several vignettes as well.

An encyclopedic history of Presbyterians in Mississippi, this book provides a wealth of information on the pioneers, early missionaries to the Indians, preachers, committed elders, and the congregations and governing bodies of the Presbyterians from the time of their first entry into the territory at the turn of the nineteenth century, with detailed treatment of Civil War events, Reconstruction, the role of women in the Church and Mississippi's descent into the Jim Crow era. An Alabama Presbyterian wrote in 1819 of his tour through Mississippi, finding it as "destitute of regular preachers" as his own state. In fact, the 1815 Synod of Kentucky commissioners had authorized forming a "Presbytery of Mississippi." The Alabama traveler had correctly identified the problem, for Mississippi Presbyterians had yearned for more ministerial leadership for decades. And the need for missionaries to Native Americans was critical. Winter treats the issues of that time-what and how to teach Native Americans; how to deal with complex issues of slavery and manumission; how to reconcile the Christian gospel with tribal religion and culture. He devotes significant space to the treatment of slaves, of whites' preaching to them, and the development of pro-slavery Presbyterian theological stances. He devotes a whole chapter to the ministry of James Adair Lyon, pastor in Columbus Mississippi who advocated church involvement in the public square, reform and abolition of slavery, and reunion of the divided branches of the Presbyterian Church-all generally unpopular in the Mississippi of his day. Since Winter has served for many years as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Holly Springs, he naturally mines the minutes, diaries, and letters of members of that significant congregation to describe much of nineteenth-century Presbyterian life. Part of the special value of this work is the insight a dedicated and competent pastor can give to the whole fabric of Christian living-to the ministry of women's groups, Sunday schools, mission involvement, stewardship habits, and the moral emphases through time, including some of the members' quirks-all things which are generally neglected in a larger narrative. 94 illustrations, including studies in church architecture. Fully indexed.
