The phenomenon of fire in the Australian landscape traverses many interests and disciplines. At a national level, there is an urgent need for the integration of both the natural and social sciences in the formulation of public policy. With contributions from 30 leading experts, Australia Burning draws together these issues, under the themes: *Ecology and the environment *Fire behaviour and fire regime science *People and property *Policy, institutional arrangements and the legal framework *Indigenous land and fire management The book examines some of the key questions that relate to the ecology, prediction and management of fire, urban planning, law, insurance, and community issues, including indigenous and non-indigenous concerns. It looks at what we need to know to inform public policy, given the present risks and uncertainty, and explores the avenues for closer integration between science, policy and the community.

Risk Framework For Operational Risks Associated With Prescribed Burning written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with categories.

AFAC has engaged with prescribed fire practitioners throughout Australia to derive a common framework for addressing operational risks associated with prescribed burning. The Risk Framework for Operational Risks Associated with Prescribed Burning, together with three existing risk frameworks (for smoke, fuel hazard and ecological risks) completes the risk management component of the National Burning Project. Prescribed burning is an important part of managing landscapes in many parts of Australia in order to achieve various objectives such as bushfire risk mitigation, ecological maintenance and various land management outcomes. Although prescribed burning is one of the key tools available to reduce bushfire risks, it is itself an activity that contains significant inherent risks. The safe and effective conduct of a prescribed burn requires careful and thorough planning to ensure that the agreed objectives can be safely achieved. This document looks at operational risks to life and property and analyses the risk controls in a structured manner to help ensure prescribed burns are implemented effectively and safely. Risks to burn containment, fire crews, the public and natural and built values are considered..

Global Application Of Prescribed Fire written by John R. Weir and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-01 with Nature categories.

Global Application of Prescribed Fire provides a first-hand perspective of the various methods and ways people around the world view and use prescribed fire. It covers the logistics, constraints and social dynamics surrounding the intentional use and application of fire by humans, and demonstrates how, why, when and where prescribed fire is used in different regions. Written by international experts, the book has four key objectives: explore new techniques, ideas and thoughts on how to apply prescribed fire from a global perspective; provide regional case studies covering issues that may constrain or enhance prescribed fire projects; stimulate cross-cultural conversations about how fires function in ecosystems; and relate prescribed fire to wildfire regimes with implications for protecting life and property, as well as sustaining local fire cultures and unique fire-dependent flora and fauna. Global Application of Prescribed Fire enhances our understanding and knowledge about the application of prescribed fire. This comprehensive book will provide fire practitioners, researchers, agencies and policymakers with key ecological and managerial insight of how prescribed fires are conducted around the globe.

Burning Issues written by Mark Adams and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-16 with Science categories.

Southern Australia is one of the three most fire-prone areas on Earth. After more than a century of urban growth and valiant efforts to ‘tame’ the bush, recent decades have seen more people moving back onto the fringe or into the middle of this volatile landscape. As this movement has intensified, so has the debate on how to best protect life and property from the ever-present bushfire threat. A long-running drought and a predicted warming climate have ensured that bushfire is a dominant factor in our nation’s long-term planning. Following the tragic Victorian Black Saturday fires in 2009, a much greater urgency now confronts policy makers, land and fire managers and communities living in bushfire areas. This has led to a call for a single, simple answer on fuel reduction burning to reduce the bushfire risk. Burning Issues explains that this is a complex issue without such a simple answer. The book gives an account of the role of fire in Australia’s ecosystems, how we have to accept and live with fire, and how we can manage fire both for safety and for diversity. It aims to change people’s attitudes to fire, and to be influential in encouraging changes in land management by government agencies.
