Fernando Ortiz es una de las figuras científicas de mayor trascendencia de América Latina y el más importante etnólogo y antropólogo de Cuba. El gran sabio cubano nace el 16 de julio de 1881 y muere el 10 de abril de 1969 en La Habana. En 1895 regresa a Cuba desde España y estudia leyes en la Universidad de la Habana, estudios que terminará en Barcelona. Posteriormente se doctora en la Universidad de Madrid en 1901.En su larga y fructífera vida, que dedicó no sólo a la etnología, sino que abarcó también las ramas de la sociología, lingüística, musicología, jurisprudencia y crítica, publicó más de cien títulos. Don Fernando se dedicó infatigablemente al descubrimiento de lo cubano y al rescate y revalorización de la presencia africana en la cultura cubana. Breaking the Chains, Forging the Nation offers a new perspective on black political life in Cuba by analyzing the time between two hallmark Cuban events, the Aponte Rebellion of 1812 and the Race War of 1912. Slavery was in many ways the fundamental institution in colonial Cuba, whose economy was based on the export of sugar from the slave-worked plantations. This volume presents a quantitative study of Cuban slavery from the late eighteenth century until 1880, the year slavery was formally abolished on the island. The core of this study is an examination of the yearly movement of slave prices and changes in the demographic characteristics of the slave market. Based on data from the notarial protocol records of the Archivo Nacional de Cuba, this book establishes precise price trends for slaves by age, sex, nationality, and occupation, and considers a number of other variables including the prices of coartados (slaves who had begun the process of buying their freedom) and the patterns of emancipation. Incorporating over 30,000 slave transactions from three separate locations in Cuba - Havana, Santiago, and Cienfuegos - this work comprises the largest extant database on any slave market in the Americas.
