Britain has a vast wealth of buildings and sites (both ancient and contemporary) whose heritage value is envied and admired around the world. In light of concerns surrounding future developments within the heritage sector and given the imminent publication of the long-trailed Heritage White Paper, the Committee's report examines a range of issues relating to the historic environment, focusing on built heritage and archaeological issues. Topics discussed include: the remit and effectiveness of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), English Heritage and other heritage organisations; the heritage protection system, planning policy, the Heritage Protection Reform programme and other controls; funding issues; listed places of worship; and the importance of public engagement with heritage as a priority. Findings include that although the DCMS is well-meaning towards built heritage and seems to be guided by sound principles, it must secure more money from the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review if future public funding for the historic environment is to match the public value placed upon it. Heritage assets are a very special resource which once lost, cannot be replaced, and we are only now beginning to realise their full benefits.
