The enormous task of preserving the world's heritage in the face of war, natural disaster, vandalism, neglect, and technical obsolescence. The monuments—movable, immovable, tangible, and intangible—of the world's shared cultural heritage are at risk. War, terrorism, natural disaster, vandalism, and neglect make the work of preservation a greater challenge than it has been since World War II. In The Monumental Challenge of Preservation Michèle Cloonan makes the case that, at this critical juncture, we must consider preservation in the broadest possible contexts. Preservation requires the efforts of an increasing number of stakeholders. In order to explore the cultural, political, technological, economic, and ethical dimensions of preservation, Cloonan examines particular monuments and their preservation dilemmas. The massive Bamiyan Buddhas, blown up by the Taliban in 2001, are still the subject of debates over how, or whether, to preserve what remains, and the U. S. National Park Service has undertaken the complex task of preserving the symbolic and often ephemeral objects that visitors leave at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial—to take just two of the many examples described in the book. Cloonan also considers the ongoing genocide and cultural genocide in Syria; the challenges of preserving our digital heritage; the dynamic between original and copy; efforts to preserve the papers and architectural fragments of the architect Louis Sullivan; and the possibility of sustainable preservation. In the end, Cloonan suggests, we are what we preserve—and don't preserve. Every day we make preservation decisions, individually and collectively, that have longer-term ramifications than we might expect.

A wide-ranging and readable book that explores how our attitudes to physical remnants of the past have changed through time. Ideal for everyone interested in learning more about how heritage conservation has evolved. Preserving the Past focuses attention on the global preoccupation with preservation of the past and the many ways in which various governments, organizations and individuals have attempted to resurrect, recreate or retain ancient buildings and artefacts. E.R. Chamberlin discusses topics as diverse as the removal of London Bridge to the Arizona desert, the cleaning of Westminster Abbey, the excavation of Masada, the survival of the stately home, Colonial Williamsburg, the raising of Abu Simbel and the delicate craft of preserving works of art. We have a glimpse, too, of some of the pioneers of preservation - of William Morris, the Shah of Persia, and Henry Ford. Interviews, linked with documentary evidence, are used to throw light on the questions surrounding such subjects as the reconstruction of Warsaw, the Persepolis celebrations in Iran, the Elgin Marbles, the Crown of St Stephen and the Benin Bronzes, and the amazing growth of the antiques trade. In all, this book is a fascinating view not of the world we have lost, but of the world so many people are struggling to keep. 'A pleasant and humane ramble through the highways and byways of conservation' - June A. Sheppard, A Journal of Historical Geography

Almost all remnants of culture--past and present--degrade over time, whether sculpture or scrolls, painting or papyrus, books or clay tablets. Perhaps no major cultural record dissolves more rapidly than film, arguably the predominant medium of the twentieth century. Given the fragility of early nitrate film, much has already been lost. The fragments that remain--whether complete prints of theatrical releases or scraps of everyday life captured by Thomas Edison--only hint at what has disappeared. More recently, archives have been flooded with so much material that they lack the funds to properly preserve it all. Both situations raise questions about how film archives shape our understanding of history and culture. Janna Jones provides a stunning, tour-de-force analysis of the major assumptions and paradigmatic shifts about history, cinema, and the moving image archive, one that we ignore at our peril in the midst of the overwhelming rush toward digitization. No student of film, twentieth-century history, or archiving and preservation can afford to miss The Past Is a Moving Picture

Photographs Of The Past written by Bertrand Lavédrine and has been published by Getty Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Photography categories.

In recent years, interest in old photographs has grown significantly among a broad public, from collectors, conservators, and archivists to amateurs seeking to preserve precious family albums. Although the medium of photography is barely 150 years old, its relatively brief history has witnessed the birth of a wide range of photographic processes, each of which poses unique conservation challenges. Photographs of the Past: Processes and Preservation provides a comprehensive introduction to the practice of photograph preservation, bringing together more information on photographic processes than any other single source. Introductory chapters cover issues of terminology; the rest of the book is divided into three parts: positives, negatives, and conservation. Each chapter focuses on a single process--daguerreotypes, albumen negatives, black-and-white prints, and so on--providing an overview of its history and materials and tracing the evolution of its technology. This book will serve as an irreplaceable reference work for conservators, curators, collectors, dealers, conservation students, and photographers, as well as those in the general public seeking information on preserving this ubiquitous form of cultural heritage.
