Als die Tageszeitungen begannen, nicht nur Texte, sondern auch Bilder zu drucken, hatte dies tief greifende Folgen: Die politische Information wurde zunehmend von Bildend-Belehrendem, vor allem aber Unterhaltendem ergänzt, das breitere Leserschichten ansprach und traditionelle Milieugrenzen abzuschleifen begann. - Die empirische Basis der Studie bildet die Untersuchung des komplexen Wechselspiels im Bildangebot von Tageszeitungen, illustrierten Zeitungsbeilagen und Illustrierten am Beispiel Karlsruhes. Um 1930 konkurrierten in der damaligen, rund 150.000 Einwohner zählenden Landeshauptstadt Badens zehn Tageszeitungen um Aufmerksamkeit. - Dem Thema angemessen wird der Text nicht nur von Tabellen und Diagrammen, sondern auch von fast hundert Abbildungen ergänzt.

Berlin war in der nur vierzehn Jahre währenden, politisch unruhigen, jedoch in jeder Hinsicht kreativen Zeit der Weimarer Republik eines der großen Pressezentren der Welt. Das Publikum war damals geradezu 'hungrig' nach Informationen und Bildern. Die Zahl der Tageszeitungen, Zeitschriften und Magazine ist heute kaum zu verifizieren. In dieser Zeit, in der die Photographie zunächst nur in Illustrierten Fuß fasste, spielten Zeichnung und Graphik in der Presse noch eine dominierende Rolle. So besaß die Stadt auf Illustratoren aus mehr als vierzig Ländern eine magnetische Anziehung. Teils kamen sie auch als Flüchtlinge vor den Unruhen und Umbrüchen infolge des Ersten Weltkriegs. Bildagenturen sorgten darüber hinaus für Illustrationsmaterial aus aller Welt.0Detlef Lorenz dokumentiert das Werk von etwa 6000 Namen? darunter berühmte und gänzlich unbekannte, Spezialisten und Dilettanten unterschiedlichsten Niveaus mit all ihren Motivfeldern und Stilen? sowie 800 Signaturen. Er hat dazu rund 170 Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Magazinen ausgewertet? von den großen Tageszeitungen und Illustrierten bis hin zu kurzlebigen, jedoch kulturhistorisch wichtigen Nischenpublikationen. In den Kurzbiographien wird deutlich, dass die Weimarer Republik für die meisten Illustratoren ein Abschnitt in der Mitte ihres Lebens war: Sie wurden in der Kaiserzeit sozialisiert, viele erlebten beide Weltkriege, manche erlitten Tod, Verfolgung oder Exil durch die Nationalsozialisten (oder schlossen sich ihnen an), und verschiedene fanden später ein Auskommen im geteilten Deutschland. Es handelt sich also durchaus auch um politische Biographien.

"Mit dieser literaturwissenschaftlich beheimaten Arbeit wird ein Beitrag zur Erschließung der Literaturgeschichte als eine Geschichte literarischer Skandale geleistet. Angesichts der nach wie vor festzustellenden Forschungslücken auf dem Gebiet der literaturwissenschaftlichen Skandalforschung muss sich für diesen Beitrag zunächst allgemein mit dem Phänomen (Literatur-)Skandal an sich beschäftigt werden. Entsprechend werden theoretische Grundlagen ausgelotet, begriffliche Klärungen vorgenommen und einige Ansätze skizziert, mit denen die angestrebten Erschließungen produktiver vorgenommen werden können. Dies erfolgt u. a. im Rückgriff auf skandalogische Forschungen in anderen Wissenschaften (wie etwa in Politik-, Sozial-, Kommunikations- und Religionswissenschaften) sowie durch Anwendung dieser Überlegungen auf das sogenannte literarische Feld. Es zeigt sich, dass konkrete (Literatur-)Skandale ohne eine Beachtung ihrer Umstände kaum hinreichend zu verstehen sind. Folglich erscheint es zweckmäßig, eine weitergehende Untersuchung auf eine bestimmte Zeit einzugrenzen. Hier wird der Fokus auf Kontexte, Skandalösitäten und Skandale in der Literatur in der Weimarer Republik gerichtet. Angestrebt wird, dass durch diesen Fokus weitere, über die bloße Theorie hinausgehende Aufschlüsse über Literaturskandale gewonnen werden können. Außerdem mögen dadurch die bisherigen Erkenntnisse zu den Jahren 1918 bis 1933 ergänzt werden. Beispielhaft vertieft werden die Ergebnisse zu Literaturskandal und zur Weimarer Republik durch Blicke auf zwei prominente Skandalfälle der besagten Zeit. Namentlich schauen wir auf die Skandale um erstens Arthur Schnitzlers Reigen als Theateraufführung in Berlin (1920/21) und um zweitens Erich Maria Remarques Roman Im Westen nichts Neues (1928/29) sowie dessen Verfilmung All quiet on the Western Front (1929/30)."--Back cover.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, ideals of technological progress and mass consumerism shaped the print cultures of countries across the globe. Magazines in Europe, the USA, Latin America, and Asia inflected a shared internationalism and technological optimism. But there were equally powerful countervailing influences, of patriotic or insurgent nationalism, and of traditionalism, that promoted cultural differentiation. In their editorials, images, and advertisements magazines embodied the tensions between these domestic imperatives and the forces of global modernity. Magazines and Modern Identities explores how these tensions played out in the magazine cultures of ten different countries, describing how publications drew on, resisted, and informed the ideals and visual forms of global modernism. Chapters take in the magazines of Australia, Europe and North America, as well as China, The Soviet Turkic states, and Mexico.
