In all the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to wear a perpetual frown. We often forget the immense power of one thing: the human smile. The Power of Your Smile is a wise yet playful reminder that smiling can improve not only your day but also the days of the people around you. In fact, smiling can improve your entire life. This book focuses on seemingly silly things—maybe even minor or mundane—that in truth are very important. We could focus on difficulties, or instead, wear a smile and brighten even the most difficult times. Using jokes and anecdotes, author William Kalanta offers many reasons why a person should smile, and there are indeed many! Kalanta uses humor as a way of expressing profound, inspirational truths in a way that anyone can understand. Smiling is the best way to change your mood and turn a bad day good. You are the producer, director, and star of your life. Why waste it by wearing a frown? A smile says, “Don’t pet sweaty things and don’t sweat petty things.” A smile can change the world.

Chapter 1: Unmasking the Eccedentesiast In the vast landscape of human emotions, the smile often stands as an emblem of joy, happiness, and contentment. However, hidden behind the façade of many smiles lies a complex and intricate world of pain, sorrow, and unspoken struggles. This chapter delves into the concept of the eccedentesiast, exploring the reasons why individuals choose to conceal their pain behind a cheerful demeanor. We examine the societal expectations, personal reasons, and psychological mechanisms that drive people to become eccedentesiasts. Chapter 2: The Art of Concealing The act of concealing pain behind a smile is an art that requires finesse and skill. In this chapter, we explore the various techniques employed by eccedentesiasts to maintain their façade. From mastering the art of deflecting personal questions to developing a convincing laugh, we unravel the layers of deception that characterize the lives of those who hide their pain behind a smile. Through personal stories and psychological insights, we gain a deeper understanding of the coping mechanisms at play. Chapter 3: The Social Pressures of Perfection Society often places immense pressure on individuals to conform to an idealized version of happiness and success. This chapter examines the impact of societal expectations on the development of eccedentesiasts. We explore how the fear of judgment and rejection propels individuals to maintain a cheerful exterior while grappling with internal turmoil. Interviews with psychologists, sociologists, and individuals who have experienced this phenomenon shed light on the pervasive influence of societal pressures. Chapter 4: The Toll on Mental Health Behind the smiles lies a hidden toll on mental health. This chapter delves into the consequences of long-term emotional suppression and the toll it takes on the mental well-being of eccedentesiasts. From the heightened risk of anxiety and depression to the potential development of more severe mental health disorders, we examine the implications of concealing pain and the importance of seeking help. Personal narratives and expert opinions provide valuable insights into the delicate balance between maintaining a façade and safeguarding mental health. Chapter 5: Breaking the Chains of Eccedentesia Recovery and self-discovery are possible for those who hide their pain behind a smile. This chapter explores the journey of breaking free from the chains of eccedentesia. Through therapy, support networks, and embracing vulnerability, individuals can learn to navigate their pain authentically. Real-life success stories and expert advice guide readers on the path towards healing and self-acceptance. Chapter 6: Empathy and Understanding In the final chapter, we reflect on the importance of empathy and understanding in dismantling the culture of eccedentesia. By fostering open conversations about mental health, reducing stigma, and creating supportive environments, we can collectively work towards a society that encourages authenticity and vulnerability. The chapter concludes with a call to action, urging readers to become advocates for mental health and to cultivate compassion for those who may be hiding their pain behind a smile.

As recently as fifty years ago most people expected to lose their teeth as they aged. Few children benefited from braces to straighten their teeth, and cosmetic procedures to change the appearance of smiles were largely unknown. Today, many Canadians enjoy straight, white teeth and far more of them are keeping their teeth for the entirety of their lives. Yet these advances have not reached everyone. The Smile Gap examines the enormous improvements that have taken place over the past century. The use of fluorides, emphasis on toothbrushing, the rise of cosmetic dentistry, and better access to dental care have had a profound effect on the oral health and beauty of Canadians. Yet while the introduction of employer-provided dental insurance in the 1970s has allowed for regular visits to the dentist for many people, a significant number of Canadians still lack access to good oral health care, especially disabled Canadians, those on social assistance, the working poor, the elderly, and new immigrants. At the same time, an attractive smile has become increasingly important in the workplace and in relationships. People with damaged and missing teeth are at a substantial disadvantage, not just because of the pain and suffering caused by poor oral health, but because we live in a society that prizes good teeth and warm smiles. The first history of oral health in Canada, The Smile Gap reveals that despite the gains made, too many Canadians go without any dental care, with damaging consequences for their oral health, general physical health, and self-image. To complete our health care system, it is time to close the gap.
